My latest attempt failed and as promised I have renounced
all of my deities. However, considering that Buddha and
Lao Tzu and others probably got workings on without
deities, I have decided to try again as best I can using my
own abilities, though drawing on some collaborators
possibly including you (in Magic Circle 2).

Seems to me Lao Tzu, Li Erh perhaps or some
one who went by an other name, Lao Tan, et al,
simply wrote what was written in his name, or
copied various sayings he'd known of, or the
words attributed to him accreted over time.

If, as a librarian, he grew tired of wars
and politics and left the area, to think he
had some workings going on is a thought.

    I kinda doubt that.
The words written may have been
aimed toward a young ruler as advice.

They may have also pertained to a Tao
    in terms of transcending dualities.
    Pointing at wu-wei, wei-wu-wei,
    and a non-duality, wu-ming.

    Politically speaking, laissez-faire
could have been an idea promoted.
    Empire building was viewed as
not being a very good idea.

Not to value high priced things
could reduce a number of crimes.

Gender and such I don't see much
of in the text if at all.

    With Gautama, he had followers
and taught his views of Truths
    being categorized into Four
    basic Noble ones.

    Projecting, workings,
    on to either is curious.

Jesus arrives in mind with his
abba papa daddy in Heaven, who,
if he, Jesus, was raised up from
being dead, he said, would draw
every one toward him to a point.

    Points, waves, tides and fields.
In theory there may be a TOE.
    Beyond any GUT.

    Mystical experiences,
    cataphatic or apophatic,
    tend to vary and ultimately,
    dualities could evaporate.

    - thanks! Cheers!

Keep up the good Work, David!

You might consider that your bija mantra (seed syllable) is slightly on
the high side when you perform your incantations. If the deity does not respond promptly, or not at all, it could be your phrasing or pitch.

In my case, for some reason, I get good responses when I use threats and curses in order to get attention from Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of Knowledge. Other times, all I have to do is meditate on Her secret
    nickname for about twenty minits.

Interestingly, uncontrolled swearing does not seem to make an
improvement; it must be subtle and almost inaudible. Keep in mind that
    every deity is different.

In addition to repeating a sound, word or phrase, you might consider the following techniques:

    whistling.
    sniffing.
    clearing your throat.
    making animal sounds.
    clash a symbol.
snap fingers of your right hand.

In more general terms for the layman: "Oh God damn!" or just "Gawd!" or
"Jesus Christ!" followed by "What planet are you on?"

    Notes:

Spiritual aspirants living with Tourette syndrome can have difficult
coping with daily spiritual activities. Fortunately, the majority of
seekers will find that their symptoms subside within approximately ten
    to twenty years. YMMV.

    Ha.

I have found that cursing at my deities generally resulted
in another month being tacked on to my low/working years,
although perhaps that could be attributed to the current
sunspot cycle lasting longer than the usual 11 years.

As I said above, Nick: the symptoms usually clear up in ten to twenty years.

You're not going to get much attention from any deities by offering some
silly supplication like a banana or a coconut and getting down on your
hands and knees and begging for something.

That might work with some paper deities.

But, if you want some serious spiritual spell casting, you need to go in
there with some sense of authority. No decent, or indecent, deity is
going to just appear or call for no good reason.

So, sometimes, you just have to demand their attention! Burn a bonfire
and shout and dance about - shake a rattle and beat a drum.
