• Kernel 6.8 or 6.14 for Mint 22.3

    From Alan K.@alan@invalid.com to alt.os.linux.mint on Wed Jan 14 17:06:17 2026

Well, Mint 22.2 was running on 6.8 kernel.
I just upgraded and was reading the 'What's new' blog and playing with new things.

I notice that it says "Mint 22.3 will run with kernel 6.14"
But I still have 6.8. Should I switch over to 6.14?

If you have upgraded to 22.3 you should have 6.14. 6.8 is supported to April 2029 which is the 22.0 version.

After April 2029 you should upgrade the kernel as 6.8 will have lost
    support.

In answer to you question: unless you have a reason not to do so upgrading
    will go okay.

I would have thought the system would have done the change during the upgrade. I'll make a new image now that I have it tweaked like I want and then load that kernel.

Which, coincidentally, is also when LM22.x itself goes EOL.

A new install I did went went directly onto 6.14 but two upgrade machines stayed on 6.8
One one of them I switched over to 6.14 without any issues.

would that be because LM determined that 6.14 would be unsuitable? my PC stayed at 6.8. should I upgrade or not?

It seems that existing installations simply are staying on 6.8
I took a very old thinkpad and moved it onto 6.14 to see
what would happen... It worked perfectly.
Worst case, you can simply revert back to 6.8 but for now
(next few weeks) I would stay with 6.8 as the current 6.14
expires at the end of this month.

I'd say, run what works -- don't bother with 6.14 unless it
has features that you want or need.

(I have it running on my laptop because it has support for the
    illuminated keyboard.)

I have a Linux Mint 22.2 system running a 6.14 kernel, it is
available under "kernels" in the update manager.

Didn't notice the expire date. I'll stay here. I would guess the powers that be will
    update 6.14 but....

It depends on which color of smoke is coming from the machine.

Have a look around at comments, to see if you can align to one
    situation or the other.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1n7a5kf/kernel_68_vs_614/

At one time, there were things like HWE (HareWare Enablement) kernels.
The kernels did not have exactly the same purpose. Maybe you had a
brand spanking new laptop, and the HWE was the only one that would
boot on it. Whereas some slightly more mature hardware, could use
    an older kernel.

Drivers that install via DKMS, have kernel ranges they are good for.
Say a driver is a DKMS good to 6.8 . If you went to 6.14, maybe
the particular NVidia driver you would normally use, would not be
compatible with the kernel. And for video cards (like my fleet)
that are past the support date, I might find that the continuity
on drivers is missing, and Driver Manager either tells me to use an
older driver, or it tells me (via being missing from the menu), that
the driver in question won't work with that kernel.

If you use Nouveau as a driver instead, it may lack all the
same acceleration features, but it might work for longer.
