Just got an update to the Mint Upgrade app.
Under 'edit' you now have the upgrade from 22.2 to 22.3

Not that I'm doing it today.

I only got notice of an update to the Update Manager. I forgot that
often appears just before a version update becomes available. I guess
I'll get the notification tomorrow, but also usually wait a few days
    before applying the update.

    a few weeks.

    Thanks, Alan.

Today I've installed Linux Mint 22.3 on my aging 27 inch iMac.

    Here's the outcome:-

    1. Boot and Filesystem rCo All Correct

    From your output:

    / mounted from /dev/sda2 (ext4)
    BootCurrent: 0000 raA Ubuntu (shimx64.efi)
    BootOrder: 0000,0080
    Filesystem state: clean

    This means:

You are booting from the internal spinner (sda2) exactly as planned.

EFI is configured correctly: Linux is first, macOS external is second.

    Filesystem is clean and consistent.

So from a software and boot perspective: your Mint installation is
    properly deployed.

    2. Disk Health rCo Usable but Ageing

    SMART overall result:

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED
However, the deeper stats tell the real story:

    Key facts:

Power-on hours: ~29,173 hours (over 3.3 years of continuous runtime)

    Start/Stop cycles: 31,050

    Power cycles: 62,650

    Temperature: ~41-#C (acceptable)

    Concerning indicators:

    Reported_Uncorrect = 56

    SMART Error Count = 56

Multiple historical UNC (uncorrectable) read errors at the same LBA

Very high read/write totals (this disk has been heavily used)

There are no current pending or reallocated sectors, which is good. But:

This disk has already experienced real, logged read failures in the past.

It is well into rCLold agerCY territory mechanically.

It is stable today, but statistically not trustworthy long-term.

    In business terms:
    Serviceable, but not strategic.

    3. Practical Recommendation

    Your Mint system is:

    Technically correct

    Cleanly installed

    Booting properly

    Hardware mostly healthy

    But your internal drive is:

    Old

    Heavily used

With a history of read errors

    You should:

    Keep good backups.

Avoid storing irreplaceable data only on this disk.

Plan to replace it with an SSD if you intend to rely on this machine.

If you move Mint to an SSD later, you will gain:

    Dramatic speed improvement

    Much higher reliability

    Lower heat and noise

    Final Assessment

Linux Mint 22.3: Correctly installed and operational

    Boot configuration: Correct

    Filesystem: Clean

    Hardware: Fully supported

Disk: Aging, usable, but on borrowed time

    *Your system is working*.
    *Your disk is surviving*.

MacOS Ventura 13.7.8 is also installed on an external 1TB SSD
The picture quality on the 5k screen is still magnificent!

It's a lot like the cinnamenu applet in 22.2.-a-a I've been using that for a few weeks.

    Thanks, Alan.

Today I've installed Linux Mint 22.3 on my aging 27 inch iMac.

    Here's the outcome:-

    1. Boot and Filesystem rCo All Correct

    From your output: ...

The problem with doing this, is your output from an LLM-AI hides
your own acumen for all to see. We were hoping you would *at least*
include a sentence about your action plan, upon receiving the AI analysis.

That's the purpose of asking the AI for an opinion. Is it writes a
summary, and you're supposed to react to it. Recognizing where you are.

I have a hard drive right now, smartctl awards the drive a pass, and
for all practical purposes, the drive might as well be dead.

I was coaxing and encouraging the drive to use up its spares, as I was hoping to take pictures and show people what it looks like when a hard drive "augers in".

To my surprise, the drive *did not* auger in. The manufacturer wanted to cheat, in such a way that I could not make a warranty claim (if this had happened after
fewer power hours for example). Of the 5500 or so spare sectors, the drive stopped
sparing at exactly half of the spares. It turned off one of the drive functions,
as a way of saying "you will not punish this drive any more and make
a warranty claim". The drive is useless, you cannot install another OS, yet
the drive will not spare out any sectors either. And the drive reports <cough> "Healthy".
The spindle spins. You can kinda read some things off the drive. The drive
may have 140 CRC errors or so. But, it did not die like other drives died, where the drive refuses to spin or refuses to load the heads. It's now a zombie of sorts.

New computers will become more expensive, as the price of DDR5 and NAND go up. Old computers, as useless as they are, can still be used, especially if
you fit a new drive so they can be used. That's what we were hoping you would discuss, your action plan.

One company claimed today, shortages could exist until 2028.

Monitor stocks are depleted where I am. At one computer store, virtually all the monitors are "Special Order", which means, upon receipt, you cannot
return them. Only an actual functional failure (no light, no power, etc) constitute a reason for return. And even then, you might have to deal with
the manufacturer warranty instead of the store warranty. Thus, your aged Mac has useful materials in several categories. And you should take care of it.

You should ask the LLM-AI, giving the AI your model number, how hard
it is to change out the hard drive. And what kind of hard drive would
make a good replacement. Hopefully, something without a "mushy TLC problem".
I have a Lexar NS100 drive that is mushy, and I've backed it up before something bad happens.

ROFL. You've amply demonstrated that with SC. Why don't you attempt to
assist Snit in replacing the bad hard drive that he couldn't diagnose in his machine? That should be a good challenge for you. Your success depends on
his ability to follow instructions. ROFL! We've all seen how well he's able

actually thanked me in the thread for doing so. Again, you should refresh

help you also remembering things incorrectly as you have here. David spitballed trying to assist you, but didn't reach the conclusion that your hard drive was in a state of failure. I did, despite your efforts to
prevent and otherwise stall me from doing so.

David didn't diagnose your computers primary problem, either. I did, and,
I was the only one to do so. I realize you can't give me the proper credit because of your problems with an ego and pride, but, the thread contents support everything I've written about this subject.

Not what that symbol... but it is easy to "translate":

    Windows Key = Command Key
    Alt Key = Option Key
    Ctrl Key = Control Key

(You can alter this in software, but those are the signals sent).

your error (as if you were my sock!) To be fair, I have said Pothead
claimed you were my sock... but she did not directly do so. I should be
more careful and not it is AS IF you were my sock.

Pothead made no such claims concerning me,

Right... she pretended *I* made your error. She made the claim about me, AS IF I made YOUR error. As if you were my sock.

You really do have an issue with basic comprehension. LOL!

David B. reports a successful upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3
Cinnamon on aging 24" and 27" iMacs. He provides a detailed
health check of his system, noting:

Status: OS is correctly deployed and booting via EFI
    (shimx64.efi).

Hardware: 27" iMac internal HDD is showing signs of age
    (29k+ hours, 56 uncorrectable errors).

Recommendation: He advises users on similar hardware to
prioritize backups and transition to SSDs for reliability.

UX: Confirms a slight learning curve with the new 22.3 start
menu but reports overall system stability and excellent 5K
    display support.

I used the exact same prompt for your post as I did with Gremlin's posts. It

For the most part, you're copy/pasting from AI. Is that a challenge?

    You are *FULL of SHIT*

    Let's discuss THIS thread:-

Sure, or you could attempt to answer my simple question. Is c/p from AI
    a challenge for you?

I'd probably be upset if they'd changed the menu when I upgraded.

Thankfully, my Xfce desktop looks the same. Still using
NVIDIA 580.105.08 with Xfce, since the newer drivers have
some issue with Xfce's compositor. (Talking about X11 --
    no Wayland for Xfce yet.)

Based on a check today, for an item I was tracking, there
seems to be some amount of hoarding going on. Virtually all
the stores in the chain, had that particular hard drive bought
up, and at the price charged for the drive, there was no reason
at all for anyone to buy them.

I would then expect to find "Model xxx hard drive" on ebay.ca
for some ridiculous price, with a little extra profit for
the scalper. The size of the drive, is not attractive for AI datacenters,
it's a smaller drive for a home user. It's just weird that all
the stores were cleaned out. Only two of the drives remain.
    Which is also weird :-/

DRAM at the store is marked as "zero inventory" as well. But I
suspect, if I drove to the store and bought a motherboard
and a CPU and I said to the clerk "now, what DDR5 can I install
in this new build?", like magic he would reach under the counter
and pull out 2x8GB DDR5. I think there is still DRAM, except
they're not exposing it on the web site so scalpers cannot
    mechanically clean it out.

If the store resorts to "drop shipping everything", then...
it isn't really a store any more.

I'm just waiting for that store to go bankrupt. This is
what the AI era should lead to, is no more retailing possible
and a sector just wiped out. Even Newegg.ca is looking
pretty sad right now, in terms of choices for materials. One
search I did there, resulted in six items on the web page,
which is roughly the same result as my local computer
store web site gives for the same search.

I know that some items are plentiful. I have always been able
to get motherboards and CPUs. I used to be able to say the word
"RAM" too in such an example, but not any more. In the store, the
counter area with motherboards and CPUs was always jam packed full.
But other areas (want a USB stick?), the wall of hooks is empty,
and in the case of USB sticks, that was not hoarding, it's basically
no stick was available starting about mid year last year.

The monitor section is just demonstrator models, no boxed stock
waiting to go. And the web site, instead of listing all those
as "open box", instead lists all monitors as "Special Order", and
usually with "Special Order" items, there are fewer options
like the return options. Because they're just drop-shipped
    from somewhere else.

Even the Staples I checked, was thin. I was trying to see if
they had any 4K 32" monitors. Well, it's just an aisle of HD
monitors 1920x1080. Usually in January, I check for bargains
there, as they usually have some B-grade monitors they bring
in on purpose for people like me. But there was nothing
of note this year. If I needed some sort of monitor, I could
have one, but there wasn't an excess of boxed units under
    the shelf.

Summary: There are just two possibilities at retail
    1) Scalping hoarders buy up all the stock (have to hide the DDR5).
    2) Supply side is not working, nothing coming in.

You can still get a motherboard and a CPU, but nothing
else to finish the built :-) There's no reason for an NVMe
or a HDD or a monitor (boxed/new) to be just sitting there.
    Hoarded or unavailable.

And the pricing of unrelated items has gone up. Presumably
as the store approaches bankruptcy. They've already reduced
the staff as much as they can. A minimum staff is needed
    just to prevent shoplifting.
