The Friedmans rented a bungalow-apartment from us as a weekend place in the 1970s
before getting their own near Lake Oscawana in Putnam Valley...their primary residence before was in a Brooklyn apartment used for shooting the movie THE SENTINEL just before they moved in,and they got a piano as part of the deal. (The film assumes that having a Catholic cleric/religious who has faked death in a previous identity staring blindly out of the top floor of a building at
a particular location is necessary and sufficient to keep the basement of
that building from being invaded from Hell beneath).

He changed his name from Morton to Mordechai (and rejected still being called "Morty" regardless) as part of a commitment to (Reconstructionist IIRC) Judaism,
during the period in which he rented from us,and in that time he also challenged
my father to a bicycle race to a nearby store and lost.

I once babysat their 2 boys they had as of when The Silmarillion was new (1977).
The 2-year-old tried to play chess with me...they were united on not wanting to go to bed when they were supposed to.I remember Ellen laughing as she drove me home and I recounted the night's exploits.
