PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) -A local restaurant owner is fed up after his
business was broken into four times in the past few months.
A plywood board now covers the front door of SandovalrCOs Mexican
Restaurant in the West Hills Plaza. Saturday brought another break-in
for owner Danny Sandoval, the fourth in the past few months.
rCLFirst time was on October 18th, second time was January 1st, third was January 15th, and our fourth time March 1st,rCY Sandoval said.
Businesses across Portland are feeling the weight of rising retail
theft, an issue that has only worsened since the pandemic.
A sign on the front door reads rCLNo cash on premisesrCY but that has not stopped the last four burglars from causing tens of thousands of dollars
worth of damage.
Sandoval said cash is never left in the restaurant overnight, and he
claims this is the most frustrating part.
rCLItrCOs frustrating we have been here for 28 years and the last 15 years
we have had nothing, but then all of a sudden we are the hottest spot
there is just all for the wrong reasons,rCY he said.
Sandoval has had to replace three windows, the front door, the safe
inside his office, and the office door multiple times.
Sandoval said the damage from the break-ins has caused at least $10,000
of damage each time.
rCLWe did file an insurance claim after the first one but the more
frustrating thing is I canrCOt place another claim or another claim or
another claim or werCOd be out of insurance,rCY Sandoval said. rCLIrCOve talked
to a few of my other restaurant buddies and they told me they were
dropped after three claims.rCY
Not wanting to lose his insurance, Sandoval started to pay for the
repairs himself. But the break-ins arenrCOt just a financial impact.
rCLIrCOm starting to feel really bad for my employees because they feel violated because they see what happened and itrCOs not fun,rCY Sandoval said.
While Sandoval is angry, he is still thankful the Washington County SheriffrCOs Office continues to respond quickly and has increased patrols around the West Hills Plaza.
