Wells Fargo laid off 50 employees working in downtown Portland this
week, the latest in a string of Oregon job cuts the bank has made over
    the past year. -----

Wells FargorCOs layoffs add to downtown PortlandrCOs woes. The cityrCOs core has been slow to recover from the pandemic and social upheaval in the
summer of 2020. Downtown pedestrian activity remains more than a third
lower than before COVID-19 and the city has one of the nationrCOs highest office vacancy rates.

This weekrCOs job cuts are the latest in a historic surge in mass layoffs
that began last year. Oregon employers have laid off more than 11,000
workers during in the past 19 months, a level comparable to the early
    days of the Great Recession.
