    Hi badgolferman,

The moment I saw this post, I had tested the suggested read-only server
since I've tested *every* free server ever posted to this newsgroup over
the decades. Most don't work, of course - but some - of course - do work.

I was able to get the grouplist from lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu:119
using user:read pass:only, which included the common text-only OS
newsgroups such as "misc.phone.mobile.iphone" and "comp.mobile.android".

For example, I was able to retrieve your recent post to the newsgroup:
    Path: archive.pugleaf.net!ygg-srv.newsdeef.eu!srv.newsdeef.eu!weretis.net!feeder9.news.weretis.net!news.quux.org!eternal-september.org!feeder3.eternal-september.org!news.eternal-september.org!eternal-september.org!.POSTED!not-for-mail
    From: badgolferman <REMOVETHISbadgolferman@gmail.com>
    Newsgroups: misc.phone.mobile.iphone
Subject: India overtakes China in smartphone exports to the U.S.
    Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2025 07:55:30 -0400
    Message-ID: <106acri$2k69m$1@dont-email.me>

Normally I'd remove the specific-to-me PATH but notice that the last (left-most) node is archivef.pugleaf.net while the penultimate node
is related to "newsdeef", so I think it is working as read only.

It's not working for posting though, as confirmed by a test from me
where I replied with a test message to that posting of yours above.
    Posting article failed: Unknown CMD;

There's also a strange warning when retrieving articles from the server.
When asking for article 200720, server returned article 0.

    This happened with comp.mobile.android & misc.phone.mobile.iphone
so I think the server has a configuration issue - but the articles
that showed up in my feed seemed to be in order and all there.

it sure is! . . . nearly half a million newsgroups . . . seems that most of those
    "odd-ball" groups (many with ridiculous/nonsensical/long/vulgar/juvenile...titles)
were probably never intended to receive much attention apart from some pranksters,
    e.g., this exhibit with 94-characters, including 13 periods "." and 3 hyphens "-",
this "newsgroup" only shows 25 articles, all posted within one month back in 2003:

    Newsgroups: alt.rectum.nearly.killed-um.keith-wigdor.aka.jbenway.aka.wigway.but.everyone.knew-her.as.nancy

see, even looking at silly newsgroups can be fun ... somebody liked the beatles?
perhaps ... also notably, none of the other servers that i use (w/40tude dialog)
include it, but they do alt.rectum.nearly.killed-um.keith-wigdor.aka.jbenway.aka

probably less than 5000 text newsgroups have ever actually gotten much meaningful
activity in the past 44 years, and of those maybe about 1200 are currently active
(the majority of the post-y2k newsgroups are awash in troll-farm/a.i.-bot twaddle)

Had anyone been able to connect to this one with tin newsreader?
I always get 'NNTP connection error. Exiting...' after
'Reading groups from active file...' part.

Here is the last part of tin debug log (/tmp/NNTP/):

    nntp_command(LIST COUNTS)
    [10:50:31.801409] LIST COUNTS
get_server() 120 sec elapsed without response
    nntp_close(TRUE) END

Looks like its stuck just after 'LIST COUNTS' command (doesn't get
any response within 120 sec period).

    I use tin 2.6.3 release 20231224.
On the lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu server I used usenet/archive login pair.

P.S. Thunderbird can connect to this server for some reason and I
can see the list of groups and subscribe just fine.

not sure, but "read only" . . . seems clear enough, and that server is bound
to be getting plenty of activity, i.e. with no more "gg" muddying the waters

p.s. your sig is reminiscent of "doublethink" . . . thou shalt and shalt not
    ^^^ https://duckduckgo.com/?q=doublethink
Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in which subjects are expected to >simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as truth, often at odds with >their own memory or sense of reality. Doublethink is related to, but differs >from, hypocrisy. George Orwell coined the term doublethink as part of the >fictional language of Newspeak in his 1949 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty- >Four.
    [end quote]

schizophrenia is the classic term for "do as i say, not as i do", which also includes "we were only doing our duty", "nothing personal it's just business" and they're on a mission from god, they themselves are god, or god sent them

It works now! Was it something you've fixed? Thank you!

I can connect, see the list of groups and subscribe, but now I'm
experiencing some random disconnections (or is it the idle timeout

It works now! Was it something you've fixed? Thank you!

yes this is some ugly piece of server code
has lots of bugs and I try to fix them.

I can connect, see the list of groups and subscribe, but now I'm experiencing some random disconnections (or is it the idle timeout
too short, I don't know for sure). If that's your server, can you
take a look?> Here is the last part of tin debug log:

    Thank you, Billy G.!
Fantastic retention! I've never seen such a long retention times on
a free server (although I'm not a long time Usenet user, probably
10 years or so). The earliest messages go back to 1987 - perhaps,
    the year of Great Renaming.

    thank you!

I've tested it a little bit and there were no unexpected
reconnections. Looks like the idle period is 5 minutes and that's ok.
But the first reconnection still takes one minute - tin shows
"TLS handshake done: TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384" message, then asks to
    reconnect again.

    Very good!

Can you try: openssl s_client -connect lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu:563

and see if this takes long too?

    should see something like:
    ---
    read R BLOCK

then it works like telnet, you can type

or tin is downloading the active file ,

I've tried that and connection seems to be ok.
The response for the following commands was pretty quick (within 1s).

    THANKS!

that 1m delay is weird... output looks normal
capabilities terminate with crlf dot crlf
    ..tin should continue..

could be an issue in tin, via openssl and telnet never waits...
but AUTHINFO SASL announced and SASL line is missing in capabilities

502 - I'll fix later but that's not the issue

    THANKS!

that 1m delay is weird... output looks normal
capabilities terminate with crlf dot crlf
    ..tin should continue..

could be an issue in tin, via openssl and telnet never waits...
but AUTHINFO SASL announced and SASL line is missing in capabilities

502 - I'll fix later but that's not the issue

I also tried to connect using slrn newsreader (for which I'm not
an expert). Here is how it goes in the terminal:

    vmacc@vmdebian:~$ slrn --debug ~/.slrn_debug.log -f ~/.slrn/nd.jnewsrc -h lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu
    slrn 1.0.3

    Loading /usr/share/slrn/slang/slrn.sl
    Reading startup file /etc/news/slrn.rc.
    Reading startup file /home/vmacc/.slrnrc.
Using newsrc file /home/vmacc/.slrn/nd.jnewsrc for server lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu.

All those (dis)connections go pretty quickly, i.e. no long delays (just "Checking news ..." took 10-12 seconds).

    And here is the .slrn_debug.log:

Connection to E-S went ok and quick with the same slrn settings,
which are actually default except these:

    vmacc@vmdebian:~$ cat .slrnrc
    nnrpaccess "lux-feed1.newsdeef.eu" "usenet" "archive"
    set force_authentication 1

    I hope that helps.
