Seems the Double Cheeseburger used to be called McDouble, and would
have had two slices of cheese. The modern McDouble only has one. This

I prefer the modern one, as I see it as a better balance of meat and
cheese. Take one McDouble, add a middle bun and a few cents worth of lettuce, substitute the ketchup and mustard with puke sauce, and
folks will happily pay more than twice the price.

Currently, McDonald's offers:
McDouble
Double Cheeseburger
The McDouble offers ONE slice of cheese. The Double Cheeseburger
offers TWO slices of cheese.
The Double Cheeseburger was first introduced as a promotional item in
the 1950s and became a permanent part of the national menu in 1965.
The "McDouble" name first appeared in 1997 for a short-lived burger
that actually had lettuce and tomato instead of cheese. However, the
McDouble as we know it todayrCotwo patties with one slice of cheeserCowas officially launched in 2008. The McDouble was born out of economic
necessity. In the mid-2000s, rising ingredient costs (specifically
cheese) made it impossible for McDonald's to keep the Double
Cheeseburger on the $1 Dollar Menu
McDonald's should discontinue the McDouble since its a waste of time
trying to remember which one is which.
The Triple Cheeseburger only comes with TWO slices-- they should make
it THREE.

I had no idea!
OK then, and what of the DAILY DOUBLE!
https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/daily-double.html
Curious about what is in a Daily Double? ItrCOs made with two 100%
beef patties, seasoned to perfection, and melty American cheese
topped off with shredded lettuce, slivered onions, mayo and two
juicy slices of tomato.
Duplication, duplication, duplication...
A McDouble is the only sandwich that I order - it's the only one that
I can eat without feeling ill. I'd eat a Daily Double but I've never
seen it on the big board. The McDouble has a single slice of cheese
and I'm okay with that. The Filet-O-Fish sandwich is a most unlucky
sandwich - it has only a half slice of American cheese. Why? I donno.

https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/filet-o-fish.html
"Ingredients in the Filet-O-Fish-<
Fish Filet Patty
Regular Bun
Tartar Sauce
Pasteurized Process American Cheese Half Slice"
This has to be just flinty cheapness, what other excuse is there?
Tsk...
Putting cheese on fish is weird. Perhaps it's about proportions. I
wouldn't want more process cheese. If I ordered a Filet-O-Fish, it
would be with no tartar sauce, and extra, extra pickles.
