Have you considered clearing your browsing history (automatically) when
you close your browser? This should remove anything/everything that you
    might consider risky.

    Here's a solution from the pre-WebExtensions days:

Unfortunately the "Custom Buttons" extension seems to have never
been ported to WebExtensions. Is there a replacement or another way
to make buttons to change single user-specified about:config
settings in modern Firefox versions? That Stack Overflow discussion
already describes how "bookmarklets" won't work.

I thinwhat youare asking is whether there could be a Firefox-compatible PrefBar? The current lack of this is why I stick with SeaMonkey.

A web Extension could not do it - by design. It's an obvious

    beacon.enabled = false
    network.http.sendRefererHeader = 0

It's cross-site tracking that I'm worried about with these
settings, and that happens while browsing regardless of what's kept
in the browser's history. The aim is to avoid companies building a
profile of my general online behaviour, not to hide anything
specific. It's far from the complete solution, but it's one part
    that might help.

Yes that looks like a similar thing to "Custom Buttons".

The current lack of this is why I stick with SeaMonkey.

But I assume using SeaMonkey brings up more compatibility issues
itself? I actually do most of my Web browsing in Dillo, but fall
back to Firefox when I really need a "fancy" website to work (or to
not call me a "bot"). Using a chain of three browsers Dillo ->
SeaMonkey -> Firefox would be too much trouble for me.

A web Extension could not do it - by design. It's an obvious
    security risk.

That attitude annoys me because Web Extensions do all sorts of
things that are obvious security risks, like sending data to 3rd
party sites, and opening new webpages (eg. when you're about to
    enter credit card details).

You've got to trust extensions you use one way or another, and the
prompt Firefox gives you about what permissions you grant to them
helps with that. Shouting "secutity risk!" when extensions can do
so much just by injecting Javascript into pages, for example, is
meaningless. Just let me choose for myself, same as any other
    software I install.

Yes I also think webpages using 3rd party Javascript themselves is
a huge security risk that nobody shouts about. Disabling the
"beacon" feature for sites that work without it is one small part
of my limiting the many risks, although I'm always much more
satisfied to find websites that don't require Javascript in the
    first place.
