• Black google maps street view

    From Mike Easter@MikeE@ster.invalid to alt.comp.software.firefox on Sat Jan 10 12:27:34 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.firefox

    Linux Mint Firefox 134.0
Routine google maps works fine; when I drag the person icon onto the map
to enable street view, I only get a black screen when shifted into
    streetview.

I have two extensions; uBlock origin and Privacy Badger.

If I use Ffx in troubleshooting mode, the street view works correctly.

If I use Ffx w/ both extensions above disabled, street view does not
    work correctly.

The other conditions said to be affected by troubleshooting are the
hardware acceleration, userchrome & usercontent, JIT compiler.

How do I deal w/ this condition/problem next? I have not personally
    modified my userchrome.

Another datapoint: On similar other hardware: live LM 22.1 Firefox 134.0 default condition, no added extensions or other changes - same faulty
street view as above, troubleshooting mode fixes the problem.

Also, one more minor data point: when the person icon is dragged to a
street position but *before* shifting into the street view, a small
'inset' appears by the person icon which is a 'miniature' version of the street view. That miniature view does work correctly on both the live
and installed LM Ffx which do not streetview properly.

Live LMDE7 Ffx 143.0 default conditions
Same blackscreen, same troubleshooting improvement, same OK street
    miniature.

Also, the LMDE has a slightly newer Cinnamon at 6.4.13. For another
datapoint, on the live LMDE I upped the ffx to 146.0 and same black streetview.

    Next, back to the LM 22.1 live, up Cinn to 6.4.8, up Ffx to 146.0.1;
same blackscreen. This is kernel 6.8.0-51

Following a recommendation to disable hardware accel in Ffx, in settings
I unchecked use recommended settings and then also unchecked use
hardware accel when available. No joy; same problem.

There is an internal adblocker. As I recall, Mozilla embedded the
backlist from Disconnect.me. Even after you disable any adblocking
add-ons, there's still the internal adblock blacklist.

Have you tried adjusting the fingerprinting protection level aka ETP
(Enhanced Threat Protection)? Maybe you set to high.

    https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/fingerprinting-protections/ https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enhanced-tracking-protection-firefox-desktop

Running in safe (troublehooting) mode only disables some features of
Firefox, like the add-ons, user and prefs files, etc. It does not
eradicate any tweaks you made in about:config. Create a new Firefox
profile which starts with no add-ons, and no tweaks. You get the factory/install state of Firefox. Having a fresh profile that you never pollute can help diagnose problems with your active profile. You can
use the Profile Manager to decide which profile to load, and which will
be the default profile when Firefox loads.

Sparky has an aptus appcenter for installing 41 different browsers.

I started w/ chromium: googlemaps didn't work at all, blackscreen.
Midori didn't run at all. Chrome browser blackscreen for streetview.

Konqueror works properly when opted for 'lite mode' for google maps and
    works properly for streetview.

Librewolf works properly for maps & streetview.

Since I hadn't previously had experience w/ Librewolf, I did some
reading about it compared to Ffx as well as other browsers in an article
on the windscribe site, which I also consider to be a useful tool.

That article also includes comparing it w/ Brave. Bottom line, the
windscribe article likes Librewolf best, particularly Librewolf plus windscribe :-)

    https://windscribe.com/blog/is-librewolf-safe/

Librewolf is not in the conventional repo/s and I have never heard of
extrepo which is the repo for it:

    https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/plucky/man1/extrepo.1p.html https://packages.debian.org/sid/extrepo

All things considered, I may switch from Ffx to Librewolf; I can't see
    any reason to not.

My problem w/ google maps didn't set out to be an argument against Ffx
in this group, but I guess it turned out that way.

My ETP is normal. I even changed to custom and lessened normal; no
    help.

Just checking. When choosing Custom settings for ETP, did you disable
all fingerprinting and tracking options under Custom? That will disable
all the internal mechanisms incorporated into Firefox.

    https://blog.mozilla.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/ETP_EN_Custom_PC_Cropped-600x508.jpg

    Disable all settings in there.

My several live default Ffx in live LM & LMDE mentioned all have the
    default profiles.

Are you on released, nightly, beta, or ESR channels of Firefox?

Are you using an VPN? That can incur delays in propagating the traffic.
Test without any VPN whether external or intenal to Firefox.

    Firefox Is Testing a Free, Built-In rCLBrowser-OnlyrCY VPN https://windowsreport.com/firefox-is-testing-a-free-built-in-browser-only-vpn/

There has been an integral VPN (aka Secure Network) in Edge for a while.
It can have problems if you run another VPN, and the Edge VPN is active.
I don't use the VPN inside of Edge. I use the free version of Proton
VPN, and only engage it to circumvent geofencing.

Opera is another web browser with an integrated VPN. Now it looks like
Mozilla wants to add one to Firefox. Mozilla is supposedly only testing
it now, but maybe it already crept into beta builds. Don't know if
Mozilla is rolling this out into released builds.

You said Google Maps street view works in Firefox's troubleshooting
    mode.

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode

You already tried disabling all add-ons. You said you tried disabling
hardware acceleration. Have you tried disabling Firefox's JIT
    (Just-in-Time) Javascript engine?

    https://superuser.com/questions/1668807/how-to-disable-jit-compiler-just-in-time-compiler-in-firefox
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation

I recall there was some vulnerability in Firefox. There were exploits
that utilized miscompilation in the JIT part of the Javascript engine.

    https://www.wiz.io/vulnerability-database/cve/cve-2025-13024

The cure, for now, was to disable JIT. I'm not saying Google Maps is malicious, but it's possible they execute code that farks with the
timing of JIT compilation. See what happens when you disable JIT for
    the Javascript engine.

That's better than trying to figure out what is 'wrong with' Ffx on this

From everything I've read so far and seen in this example/thread,
Librewolf is a 'better' browser than Ffx by some metrics.

Since then, I've been doing more reading, such as querying about the *disadvantages* of such as Librewolf. Also, while normally I eschew
watching YT vids, occsly I do, if I haven't yet found a nice text
    discussing the same thing.

In this case, I watched a vid comparing Mullvad, Librewolf, and Ffx for privacy, particularly re tracking and fingerprinting. BTW, normally I
am NOT a privacy buff who cares about tracking or fingerprinting.

In any case, the vid gave Mullvad a very slight edge over Librewolf on
one issue while of course Ffx fell flat.

gglAIov google AI overview said that sometimes the privacy browsers
break a website and named a number of other disadvantages which altho' numerous, didn't seem too troublesome. At the end, it said:

For less extreme privacy: Firefox with Arkenfox user.js or Mullvad
Browser offer good privacy without breaking as much

I don't understand why Mullvad would break less than Librewolf.

    Here's the vid comparing them:

a slightly different name and is dated '26 Jan.

    pop-os_24.04_amd64_intel_16.iso
    pop-os_24.04_amd64_generic_22.iso (fresh)

What is up w/ that difference?

It's got new COSMIC Desktop. Are you sure it is dated 25 Jan?

    I said '26 above.

I just dl/ed it; will check it out.

Not a very fast boot; but I didn't time it.

Comes up trying to install, but I figured out how to abort it; in that
mode it seemed to be overloading the ram or graphics. Mouse movement weak/erratic.

Out of install mode, cursor moving normally. free -m sez >2G ram used to desktop.

    Firefox 146.0 streetview black

    Graphics says wayland (and xwayland).
I get two different answers for the cosmic v using
    apt policy cosmic-session

and no info using inxi -Sxx, sez Desktop N/A

Ha. Found it from a blog comment link.

Live LM Cinn 22.3 Ffx 146.0 Streetview doesn't work.
    Troubleshooting ok.

Live LM Cinn 22.3 Mullvad browser 15.0.3 (no Mullvad VPN)
    Streetview works OK.

How strange that Librewolf and Mullvad are ok, while Fx itself
    isn't.

I really don't like YouTube videos when explaining something like that.
Why use a couple of tables on a page which you can scan in half a minute
when you can take 10 minutes watching the same thing less clearly on a
    video.

I agree; I 'never' click YT links that others post, and I almost never
click the YT links that answer a query I seek, unless there is just
nothing else. Also, when I DO go to YT for info, I *hope* that there is
a transcript available to scan instead

Whoa. That is pretty thorough. There is very little diff between
Librewolf and Mullvad except down there in the DNS privacy section.

He did a lot of work; 13 diff browsers in conventional and private
modes. That reminds me of the work of That One Privacy Guy before he
sold the name to commercial interests.

If I'm starting w/ a live default condition Ffx 146.0 which has no
extensions and no 'history' in terms of its cache etc and streetview is
black unless I use the troubleshooting mode, what can I do/set/configure
to 'duplicate' the troubleshooting mode without using troubleshooting?

gglAIov says that mode disables extensions, themes, and hardware
    acceleration.

I've gone to the add-ons and disabled everything 'I can' in default Ffx,
I've changed performance to not use hardware acceleration.

gglAIov says that if such persists, then the fault lies w/ the install
or the OS, which are default and reported to work satisfactorily for
    others on their hardware.

The only thing I can't change in the add-ons is System theme auto which follows the OS settings. I can change Mint's theme from 'mixed' to dark
or light in the form of Mint- X, Y, or L.
