• Windows Live Mail Not Showing Attachment Previews

    From Boris@Boris@invalid.invalid to alt.comp.os.windows-10 on Tue Dec 23 01:34:39 2025
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.os.windows-10

I run Windows Live Mail 2012 on many new and old machines.

    An XP SP3 desktop
    Two Windows 7 Home laptops
    Two Windows 10 desktops
    Two Windows 10 laptops
    A Windows 11 desktop, and
    A Windows 11 laptop

I do not have a Microsoft account.

WLM previews any attachment (jpg, pdf, mp3, etc.) that is attached to an email, by simply highlighting (selecting) the email. That is, if I
highlight the email, the jpg for instance, will show a thumbnail of the
jpg. If a pdf is attached, I'll see a pdf icon and the name of the pd. I don't have to open the email to see the contents of any attachment.

Lately, on only one of the Windows 10 laptops, attachments are not being previewed when the email is selected. I have to open the email to preview
    the attachment.

I don't know when this began happenning, but it may have been after a
November or December update. There's three updates during that span. I'm willing to uninstall an update to see if that is the cause, but before I
try that, I wanted to ask here for any thoughts.

So far, I've done a repair of Windows Live Essentials with no luck. I've
done a System Restore with no luck. I've also searched and followed instructions that seemed useful, but still no luck. As far as I can see,
this machine is configured the same as those that are working 'correctly'.

Anyone still running WLM with any ideas?

    Thanks.

Been far too long since I last used any version of WLM. However, wasn't
it possible to option to show or not show the preview pane which is
where, I believe, you see the preview of attachments in an e-mail?

Are you running WLM as an administrator process?

In the Add/Remove Programs list, find WL Essentials, click on Uninstall,
and then Change which might offer a Repair option. Else, use wlarp.exe
(should be under the C:\Program Files\Windows Live <something> folder).
You could also try Win+R to get the run dialog, and enter "wlarp". I
don't know if the repair means losing your local POP message store, but
if you're using IMAP then the client syncs to the server, anyway.

I've managed to install, but not reproduce the problem.

My attachment is previewed in the main email pane, and
the attachment is previewed when the mail is open its own window.
The third bit, is an HTML with inline picture which produces
    the magnified-face part of it.

    It turns out that PEBKAC.

I had checked and re-checked WLM settings, but I overlooked "View>Reading pane>Show message header in the reading pane". I enabled this, and all is fine.

    Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks for going through all that trouble. As I replied to VanguardLH, I missed a simple setting that he reminded me needed to be enabled.

Sorry for the wild goose chase.

It was worth it. I got my email server working again.

The VM I use for that, has its own email server.
And I load multiple email clients in there for test.

That setup was broken for two years, I prepared some new
certificate files, but it never seemed to work. But when
I revisited the setup, I didn't realize how close I was.
Like in your example, one client didn't work because
of one of those "random" settings that are all over the place.

the Windows Live Mail, I finally found the place to load
a certificate, and when I loaded my maillocal.p12 file,
    it finally started to work.

The email clients do not like my certificate. They think
it smells. WLM put up a dialog "this connection does not
seem to be secure, do you want to continue using this
server", to which I click the OK and then I can do an
experiment as I wish. That means it is "barely working",
    not working particularly well.

But at least it's working again :-)
