• Notepad cursor visibility

Anyone know of a way to keep the blinking cursor visible in notepad past
the approx 15 seconds when it disappears? I find that an annoying behavior.

    I think that's a power save feature.

I increased "CaretTimeout" but no change (but I didn't reboot).

But an increase of "CaretWidth" made the cursor better visible

I did see this earlier and the responses were mostly that it didn't
work, but I did just give it a try. I did restart. I set it to
ffffffff and it now blinks for 20 seconds and still disappears. But thanks.

It's what we call an "affectation".

    I believe I reported it.

OK, something for you to test.

    Open Settings : Accessibility

    Text cursor thickness preview
Hold your mouse over the slider on the right.
Make note of the current caret thickness.
Don't move the slider, until you record what the current setting is.

Next, open Notepad in W11. Type a couple words, with a space between.
Your caret should disappear (with it set at 2 in width setting).
The Notepad width, will change as the Accessibility slider is moved.

Now, in Accessibility, set Text cursor thickness to 3.
It seems to have stopped blink in the ON state this time.

This will require more testing, to see if this is a stable-trick or not.

Thanks for checking. I'll keep looking as I use it often. I seem to
recall that notepad++ might be fixable. I don't have it on this new box
yet. But I'll give it a try and get back.

Notepad++ does not have this issue. The caret line stays visible. They
have a whole crapload of settings you can adjust and one specifically
for the caret settings. You can change the width and also the blink
rate speed. I have used it in the past, but I like the simplicity of
windows notepad for simply getting some text down. But this just might
be the issue that pushes me to go with ++ from now on.

You could try bringing over some Notepad that worked properly,
as a replacement. The W10 one likely has the same caret issue.
Maybe the W8 one is OK...

On this Win11 Pro 25H2 Notepad when opened with a new blank Notepad
default txt file and/or an existing Notepad created txt file the cursor
does not blink for the entire 15 seconds.

The cursor(vertical narrow bar) blinks for 5 seconds(5X, once per second)
the changes to a fixed/same cursor with no blinking, then 15 seconds
    later it disappears.

Yes, there's a pattern to what they're doing, but
not much in the way of an explanation for why
    this benefits a user.

If this is a "CO2 thing", it's got to be the saddest
one I've ever heard of. I tried looking at the Kill-O-Watt
that stays connected to this machine, and I cannot see
a change when the blinking stops. If we're saving the
planet... we're saving it very slowly. Odes will be
    sung of this.

Another strange behavior: if you use the font "Cascadia Code"
and type <> != then they are replaced by the mathematical symbols.

That is the version with ligatures, and Cascadia Mono
should not do that. Presumably if you paste that somewhere
and apply Courier font to it, the original two characters should come back.
