I know PC memory prices have increased, but I did not realised by how
much till I clicked on a Buy it again link on an Amazon purchase made in
    2024.

Crucial is shutting down. There can still be stock in the channel.

Twenty years ago, that would have been an excellent deal.

Crucial never manufactured any memory. They rebranded the modules that
met their specifications. Crucial blames the high demand of data
centers employing AI that requires *TONS* of memory, and they're
refocusing their sales at the most profitable market.

It would be better to wait until September or October, when prices will
start to stabilise and even fall in some cases, as the AI revolution
bubble is showing signs of bursting.

Tomshardware at the moment, they've had an article where
they "pretend" that the price of DDR5 is beginning to
"plateau" )in Germany), which is just so much wishful thinking.

The bubble has already burst, it's just taking
time for the memo to be sent out.

What will we do with all the cow pastures that have been
turned into half-finished data centers ? Bitcoin farm ?

It would only be a "revolution" if it showed AGI, which
is not in evidence. To be useful, the entire model has
to change (context space too small, the O() is wrong).
It's too expensive and inflexible at the moment.
If it's going to "steal jobs", it has to solve the
"slop cleanup specialist" problem first. It's a lot
like the "self driving car", it'll be "ready, any day now".

There aren't really any countries with "an excess of electricity",
and so no matter where you stick the datacenter, its
presence is always a problem. Some places have cheap
electricity sources, but those sources are finite and
easily smothered (causing the price to shoot up).

    To a certain degree,

But Micron gave them enough autonomy, that when the
Micron-chip based modules were having problems, Crucial was
allowed to substitute Samsung chips on modules while
    the details were ironed out.

Crucial had Ballistix branded sticks (which would be
similar intent to Kingston Hyper-X), but they also made
modules without the word Ballistix, and I have four
of those on my old 440BX based system.

There are still enough suppliers of branded DRAM,
to find a source. Until the supply has
entirely disappeared, and any companies involved go under.

I don't buy unbranded stuff, as I had a lot of
trouble with unbranded sticks, so they're off my
    shopping list.

You've never peeled off the "Crucial" sticker slapped atop the modules
to see just whose chips were underneath. In addition, the JEDEC specs
set by Crucial actually overclock the chips, but then Crucial ensured
the chips were spec'ed to run overclocked stabily. Crucial is usually
better than Kingston, but I still prefer G.Skill, especially their
warranty coverage that is lifetime, and quick.

Why was it so cheap then? Who're suffering and even bleeding to sell
