• Why the US should annex Greenland

What do you think: is it manifest destiny that the United States acquire
or at least exercise control over Greenland? ThatrCOs pretty much how
America got Texas, California, New Mexico, Hawaii, the Philippines,
Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa. Then there was the Louisiana
purchase. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson doubled the size of the United
States, paying France $15 million or a bit less than three cents per
acre for a landmass that is about 26 per cent of the contiguous United
States. And letrCOs not forget about Alaska.

A few facts about Greenland. It is big: 836,000 square miles. It is home
to about 50,000 people, mostly Inuits. Historically, it has been seen as
the semi-autonomous property of Denmark. It is much closer to the east
coast of the United States than it is to Denmark rCo much, much closer if
you travel from the 51st state, sometimes known as Canada. According to
Donald Trump, werCOll get around to talking about the United States
exercising control of Greenland in rCytwo monthsrCO, maybe as soon as twenty days. rCyWe need Greenland from the standpoint of national security,rCO he recently told reporters. The Chinese and the Russians pose a threat to
the area. The EU knows this but wonrCOt publicly admit that the US must intervene to protect the Arctic region. For its part, Denmark, a nation
of 6 million people, is unable to protect its protectorate. To beef up security, said Trump, they recently sent another dog sled.

Oh, dear. All that sent the commentariat into a tizzy. The tizzy took a
dose of steroids when Katie Miller, the wife of TrumprCOs aide Stephen
Miller, took to X to post an image of Greenland overlaid with an
American flag and a single word: rCySoon.rCO Yikes. On Monday, Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, said that an American takeover
of Greenland would mark the end of the Nato military alliance. Or maybe
it is the only way to preserve the creaky Cold War relic?

Anyway, the talk in Trump world about Greenland has given mouthpieces
like the journalist Jake Tapper a case of the sads. After Katie MillerrCOs post, Tapper anxiously pestered her husband about Greenland. rCyCan you,rCO quoth Tapper, rCyrule out that the US is ever going to try to take
Greenland by force?rCO rCyGreenland should be part of the United States,rCO replied Miller. He then offered him a lesson in realpolitik. rCyWe live in
a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,rCO he said. rCyThese are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.rCO Has Miller been
reading his Thucydides (see Book 5.89)?

    https://www.thelatinlibrary.com/historians/thucyd/thucydides8.html

Miller then asked an interesting question: by what right does Denmark
have Greenland? Is it because Erik the Red founded a settlement there
around AD 1000? I think the Danes will have to do better than that.

And besides, Jake Tapper can rest easy. Trump will not be sending in a
Delta Force squadron to seize Greenland. ThatrCOs not how things will
evolve. How will they evolve? Trump wrote about it in The Art of the
Deal. There will be tears and some foot stamping by the Danes and other members of the EU. But Greenland will soon come under the orbit of the
United States. Maybe Trump will make the sort of deal that Arthur
Guinness struck when, in 1759, he leased St. JamesrCOs Gate, Dublin, for
his brewery for -u45 per year for 9,000 years.

I am sure a tidy sum will change hands over Greenland. Maybe Trump will
also extend some face-saving tokens. But Greenland is essential to AmericarCOs, and EuroperCOs, security in the region. Therefore, notwithstanding the Jakes and the Margarets of the world, Greenland will
    be ours.

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through:

China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want
Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland.

    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S.
defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for
technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western dependence on imports from China.

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through:

China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want
Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland.

    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for
defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S.
defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for
technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western
    dependence on imports from China.

US has lots of resources too.

The point is, we need to band together for self defense. The US already operates Thule Air Base, that supports NATO and U.S. strategic defense,
that is critical for missile warning, defense, and space surveillance.

Maybe greenland should take over the us.

Not sure you have thought this through.

This poll (below) is from 2025 but from what I've seen, it's pretty much the same result now.

Poll: 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S.
Poll: 45% of Greenlanders see Trump's interest as a threat
Jan 29 (Reuters) - An opinion poll indicated that 85% of Greenlanders do not wish their Arctic island - a semi-autonomous Danish territory - to become a part of the United States, with nearly half saying they see interest by U.S. President Donald Trump as a threat.

Only 6% of Greenlanders are in favour of their island becoming part of the U.S., with 9% undecided. https://www.reuters.com/world/poll-shows-85-greenlanders-do-not-want-be-part-us-2025-01-29/

America does not have the phillippines. Texas asked very politely to
join. If greenland were to ask nicely, I suspect they would be
welcome. But they ain't askin and they don't need to. Leaveem alone.

Apparently, polls show independence has been accepted in Denmark as well

That's going to be a challenge.

the east coast of the United States than it is to Denmark rCo much, much
closer if you travel from the 51st state, sometimes known as Canada.
According to Donald Trump, werCOll get around to talking about the
United States exercising control of Greenland in rCytwo monthsrCO, maybe
as soon as twenty days. rCyWe need Greenland from the standpoint of
national security,rCO he recently told reporters. The Chinese and the
Russians pose a threat to the area. The EU knows this but wonrCOt
publicly admit that the US must intervene to protect the Arctic
region. For its part, Denmark, a nation of 6 million people, is unable
to protect its protectorate. To beef up security, said Trump, they
    recently sent another dog sled.

Oh, dear. All that sent the commentariat into a tizzy. The tizzy took
a dose of steroids when Katie Miller, the wife of TrumprCOs aide Stephen
Miller, took to X to post an image of Greenland overlaid with an
American flag and a single word: rCySoon.rCO Yikes. On Monday, Mette
Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, said that an American takeover
of Greenland would mark the end of the Nato military alliance. Or
maybe it is the only way to preserve the creaky Cold War relic?

Anyway, the talk in Trump world about Greenland has given mouthpieces
like the journalist Jake Tapper a case of the sads. After Katie
MillerrCOs post, Tapper anxiously pestered her husband about Greenland.
rCyCan you,rCO quoth Tapper, rCyrule out that the US is ever going to try to
take Greenland by force?rCO rCyGreenland should be part of the United
States,rCO replied Miller. He then offered him a lesson in realpolitik.
rCyWe live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by
strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,rCO he
said. rCyThese are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of
time.rCO Has Miller been reading his Thucydides (see Book 5.89)?

    https://www.thelatinlibrary.com/historians/thucyd/thucydides8.html

Miller then asked an interesting question: by what right does Denmark
have Greenland? Is it because Erik the Red founded a settlement there
around AD 1000? I think the Danes will have to do better than that.

And besides, Jake Tapper can rest easy. Trump will not be sending in a
Delta Force squadron to seize Greenland. ThatrCOs not how things will
evolve. How will they evolve? Trump wrote about it in The Art of the
Deal. There will be tears and some foot stamping by the Danes and
other members of the EU. But Greenland will soon come under the orbit
of the United States. Maybe Trump will make the sort of deal that
Arthur Guinness struck when, in 1759, he leased St. JamesrCOs Gate,
Dublin, for his brewery for -u45 per year for 9,000 years.

I am sure a tidy sum will change hands over Greenland. Maybe Trump
will also extend some face-saving tokens. But Greenland is essential
to AmericarCOs, and EuroperCOs, security in the region. Therefore,
notwithstanding the Jakes and the Margarets of the world, Greenland
    will be ours.

    Roger Kimball

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through:

China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want
Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland.

    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for >>>> defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S. >>>> defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for
technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western >>>> dependence on imports from China.

US has lots of resources too.

The point is, we need to band together for self defense. The US already
operates Thule Air Base, that supports NATO and U.S. strategic defense,
that is critical for missile warning, defense, and space surveillance.

In this case, greenland needs to be protected against the aggression
    of the us.

So, I'm almost certain you have not thought this through.

    You need to face reality.

Greenland is a strategic ally against Russian and Chinese aggression.
What you should be concerned with is the defense of Europe and the South
    China Sea.

Greenland is a territory in name only. The problem is, who is going to
pay to replace the socialism imposed by Denmark?

It has a small, mixed economy characterized by a large public sector,
    heavy reliance on Danish subsidies.

The government is the largest employer and the major economic driver,
    funded significantly by Danish grants.

Maybe greenland should take over the us.

Not sure you have thought this through.

All borders are just lines in the sand, in this case, cracks in the ice.

around AD 1000? I think the Danes will have to do better than that.

And besides, Jake Tapper can rest easy. Trump will not be sending in a >>>> Delta Force squadron to seize Greenland. ThatrCOs not how things will

Deal. There will be tears and some foot stamping by the Danes and

of the United States.

But Greenland is essential

notwithstanding the Jakes and the Margarets of the world, Greenland

    Roger Kimball

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through: >>>>>
China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want
Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland.

    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for >>>>> defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S. >>>>> defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for
technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western >>>>> dependence on imports from China.

The reality is that himbo will find a way to grab greenland. What a
    creep.

Greenland is a strategic ally against Russian and Chinese aggression.
What you should be concerned with is the defense of Europe and the South >China Sea.

All borders are just lines in the sand, in this case, cracks in the ice.

join. If greenland were to ask nicely, I suspect they would be
welcome. But they ain't askin and they don't need to. Leaveem alone.

The largest employers in Greenland are the various levels of
administration, including the central Kingdom Government in Denmark, the
Local Greenland Self-Rule Government, and the municipalities. Most of
these positions are in the capital Nuuk.[20] Forty-three percent of Greenlanders work for the government, compared to 15% in the United States.

    why shouldn't we...

    Who's that?

    Not us that's for sure.

    you cannot speak for us.

I spoke for that we you spoke for above.

So, I said you can't speak for us. You spoke for us above.

    Let me be clearer

You cannot invent a we to ask why shouldn't.

Let me say: You cannot expect anyone to know what you mean by posting
"us" or "US". Learn to type without a pencil eraser! Just saying.

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through: >>>>>>
China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want >>>>>> Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland.

    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for >>>>>> defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S. >>>>>> defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for
technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western >>>>>> dependence on imports from China.

US has lots of resources too.

The point is, we need to band together for self defense. The US already >>>> operates Thule Air Base, that supports NATO and U.S. strategic defense, >>>> that is critical for missile warning, defense, and space surveillance.

In this case, greenland needs to be protected against the aggression
    of the us.

So, I'm almost certain you have not thought this through.

    You need to face reality.

The reality is that himbo will find a way to grab greenland.

The reality is, China wants to annex Greenland and Russia wants Ukraine
    and the return of Alaska.

    What a creep.>
Sometimes you need mean creeps to get things done. You need a Pete, a
Marco, a Kristy, a Pam and a Kash.

Thanks for posting this for discussion. I have thought this through: >>>>>>>>>
China wants Taiwan and the South China Sea. Russia and Europe want >>>>>>>>> Ukraine. The US wants North and South America and Greenland. >>>>>>>>>
    What's the problem?

Greenland is important due to its crucial strategic Arctic location for
defense against Chinese and Russian aggression. It hosts critical U.S.
defense installations like the Space Base.

Greenland has vast untapped mineral resources, rare earths for >>>>>>>>> technology. Its potential mineral wealth is vital for reducing Western
    dependence on imports from China.

US has lots of resources too.

The point is, we need to band together for self defense. The US already >>>>>>> operates Thule Air Base, that supports NATO and U.S. strategic defense, >>>>>>> that is critical for missile warning, defense, and space surveillance. >>>>>>
In this case, greenland needs to be protected against the aggression >>>>>> of the us.

The thing about such things is that they are usually better not done.

You mean like national security and enforcing the law?

Those being especially exploited excuses for people to do undesirable
    things.
