    I do.

Whatever you think is wrong with that poem is in your imagination, or lack of it, Harry.

Please explain how "illumination" (whether in the literal or metaphoric sense) can be seen as the study of poetic theory compared/contrasted to "a dark night sky."

For that matter, please explain what the contrast/comparison of the study of poetic theory to a dark night sky is supposed to mean.

    Metaphysical poetry, obviously.

"A poem should not mean, but be." -Archibald MacLeish

That's an excuse for what can be euphemistically described as intellectual laziness. To borrow Barf's term, it's a stupid person's "crutch."

If that were so, then any random grouping of words would be a poem. For instance:

Think I whose house the village will see
His woods I know is stopping me.
These though in are he his not here
Watch woods to stop my farmhouse queer.

The darkest frozen woods horse year
Between fill up without a near
To snow with think it evening little
Lake must I of and the the.

is not a poem. It mostly rhymes, and has a very loose meter, but it doesn't make any sense. It's gibberish.

However, if we put the words back into their original order, we get:

Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

This makes sense, and is the opening of a very well known poem.

I don't know the context of MacLeish's statement, but I suspect he might be referring to didacticism in poetry. In that case, he is saying that a poem need not have a moral or teach a lesson -- it need only present a story or emotion that readers can identify with.

Of course, that's just a guess.

There have been plenty of dunderheaded poseurs who have made similar sounding, witless arguments for abstraction, and MacLeish may be doing the same. I would have to read his statement in context to know.

do you not understand what "poetics" means

Basically it's the study of poetry.

For starters, since you insist on the childish name-calling, I suppose I'll note that first.

In the quote Zod seems to be saying that the writer he's critiquing is a master in the study and use of "poetics."

Zod does have awkward phrases sometimes, I'll grant you.

That's what you wish he seemed to be saying, Donkey.

He *is* literally saying that either your song, your performance of it in a video, or the video itself, is a masterpiece of music and the study of poetry.

Either way, he is still misusing the word.

    Dumbass.

And the praise of an idiot who doesn't understand what he's actually saying tends to reflect more poorly on one's work than in its favor.

    display of his illiteracy.

As long as Team Douchebag gets the last word...

And the praise of an idiot who doesn't understand what he's
actually saying tends to reflect more poorly on one's work than in
    its favor.

    Of course.

Context restored and Dreckweasel looks like a fool again. Win-Win!

    Poor Douchebag!

But you aren't removing childish name-calling or troll content, Donkey. You removed a very important statement, that you are afraid to address.

    Here is what I said:

"And the praise of an idiot who doesn't understand what he's
actually saying tends to reflect more poorly on one's work than in
    its favor."

This is something that you need to learn.

When someone praises your poem, but refers to it as a "poetics" rather than a "poem," one can only conclude that this person is both illiterate and rather stupid.

And when someone who's stupid and illiterate claims that a song/poem is a "masterpiece," one has to wonder what sort of song or poem would appeal to such a person -- and relegate your poem to that category.

This is why I have often said that I would much prefer to have you or Stinky G condemn my poetry, than to have you praise it. Think of the adages "like attracts like" and "birds of a feather." I would prefer to have my poetry appeal to a poet whose work I respect and/or admire, because by receiving their praise, the quality of their work is reflected back on mine.

Sadly, you profess to admire Stinky G's poetry as well, so much of what I'm saying here will be lost on you.

    Anyhoo...

When you remove the statement you're supposedly replying to, and claim that you're dismissing it as "troll content," it shows that you lack the ability to address it. IOW: It means that you are giving up the argument.

But instead of admitting your loss, like an adult, you slap an undeserved negative label on it, run away, and hope that nobody will notice. (They will.)

I am not trying to bust your balls, Donkey. I'm giving you helpful advice.

Stop post-editing. If you're going to address something, address it in full.

The only valid excuses for deleting any portions from the conversation are for reasons of focus or space. JLA Forums will not accept a post over a certain number of lines (including those quoted in the headers). It is also difficult to follow a long discussion with all of the quoted passages intact.

But there is never any excuse for deleting a word or a line that you find offensive. If the word/line is offensive, leaving it in will only reflect poorly on the person who said it.

And there is certainly never any excuse for deleting a portion of a line and then responding to it as it the speaker had said something different. That is deceitful, dishonest, and trolling of the worst sort.

If you want people to stop attacking you, you need to stop behaving like a troll.

That's sound advice that I would give to anyone in this group. Even our resident Donkey.

You really should give it a try.

    No, he obviously wasn't.

And, even if he was, he still used the word incorrectly -- as are you (above).

Poetics = the Study of Poetic Theory.

You did not use Poetic Theory in your song.

You may have applied ideas from poetic theory in the composition of your song, but you did not use Poetics.

*This is not to so much as imply that you did apply principles of poetic theory in any of your compositions. I strongly doubt that you have ever read any treatises on the subject (Aristotle, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Poe), and even if you did, I am absolutely certain that you could not have understood them.

When Will Donkey snips someone else's comment and inserts his own lame words, he thinks he is being clever, but instead it shows how immature he is. Donkey is completely incapable of addressing anyone's argument, so he doesn't. He still wants to post, though ("needs" to post), so he snips. It is the same with analyzing anything--he can only write "well said" or "you nailed it" because he cannot think of anything to say about the topic. No writer would answer with the well-worn and tiresome stock phrases that he uses.

Who else is so proud of what he wrote in high school, keeping it for "historical" purposes? Will Donkey cannot understand or admit that what he wrote at 18 or 19, other people were writing at 12. The style and maturity of thought are the same. Will Donkey writes with the same quality now that he did 50 years ago, and his product is sub-standard and laughable. He cannot and will not learn.

    what "poetics" means

Basically it's the study of poetry.

In the quote Zod seems to be saying that the writer he's
critiquing is a master in the study and use of "poetics."

He *is* literally saying that either your song, your
performance of it in a video, or the video itself, is a
masterpiece of music and the study of poetry.

    High praise, then.

I'm sure that's what he intended it to be.

It may be your choice, Donkey, but it certainly isn't doing you any favors.

    Consider the following tale:

"Once in China, a man gave an artist money
To make a painting of a fish.
    The man waited several years
And whenever he saw the artist
    He asked for the painting.
    After waiting several more years
The man grew angry. He went to the artist's house
    And demanded the painting.
The artist took a piece of paper
    Dipped her brush in paint
And with ease dashed off the most beautiful painting of a fish.
    The man was astonished.
"If it was so simple," he said. "Why didn't you do it sooner?"
In reply the artist slid open a door.
Thousands of paintings of fish fell out."

Good afternoon, Jordy and a great sample of ancient
    poetics......!

Zod's use of the word "poetics" is fine, really:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetics
    .
    HTH and HAND.

    what "poetics" means

Basically it's the study of poetry.

In the quote Zod seems to be saying that the writer he's
critiquing is a master in the study and use of "poetics."

He *is* literally saying that either your song, your
performance of it in a video, or the video itself, is a
masterpiece of music and the study of poetry.

    High praise, then.

I'm sure that's what he intended it to be.

    Of course.

Childish name-calling from Kevin Fries noted, troll content
    removed.

This post is missing the words of others

Like I said, the childish name-calling from Kevin Fries was noted, and the troll content was removed, as always.

Who else is so proud of what he wrote in high school, keeping it for "historical" purposes?

NancyGene, if you don't want to post your high school poetry, that's your choice.

I choose to archive all of my poetry, if you're not interested simply skip and ignore.

It may be your choice, but it certainly isn't doing you any favors.

    Consider the following tale:

"Once in China, a man gave an artist money
To make a painting of a fish.
    The man waited several years
And whenever he saw the artist
    He asked for the painting.
    After waiting several more years
The man grew angry. He went to the artist's house
    And demanded the painting.
The artist took a piece of paper
    Dipped her brush in paint
And with ease dashed off the most beautiful painting of a fish.
    The man was astonished.
"If it was so simple," he said. "Why didn't you do it sooner?"
In reply the artist slid open a door.
Thousands of paintings of fish fell out."

-- Remy Charlip, "Arm-in-Arm: A collection of connections, endless tales, reiterations and other echolalia."

DONKEY: Okay, I see what you mean.

    NANCYGENE: No, you don't.

MMP: He's probably going to start posting thousands of paintings of fish.

NANCYGENE: Yes, and state that he has eaten at many fish restaurant/bars in the last 70 years, so he knows what fish are.

Ellen and Carol Horny both smelled fishy. Will Donkey liked that.

    DONKEY: Sure, I do.

    MMP: Dumbass.

Why do you lie and misrepresent so much, NancyGene?
