It rendered fine here as well as after you replied to it. I'm guessing whatever font you're using in Sylpheed is not capable of displaying it.

Hmmm.. Yes, I noticed the quoted part looked the same as the original. Sypheed offers UTF-8. It's on Auto-detect. Switching to UTF-8 didn't change anything in the previous messages.

There doesn't seem to be any "font" choices, just "encoding".

    What is real wierd, is:

    1) The creator of the program seems to have a Japanese DNS, as well as name.
    2) Both of the 'filter rule' screenshots contains Japanese characters.

However, all of his screenshots look like they were done on Linux.

There doesn't seem to be any "font" choices, just "encoding".

I wonder if the Windows version relies on the Windows default fonts?

Yeah.. could be the particular behviour of the Windows version then; limited font support. Using XP here.

Not too worried about most other foreign languages anyway. English is the new "universal". :D

I couldn't tell you the corerct answer, to be honest. I can tell you that I've had more UTF-8 issues in Windows than I have in Linux. Other than that, it's hard to say.

That's probably true to a point, it still doesn't *look* nearly as cool as a lot of other languages, even if you don't know how to read them. English is boring in comparison. :)

Maybe so but at least your editor didn't grunge them like most 8-bit fido editors do. I can't render them either given that there is no terminal based fonts for Japanese ... or Chinese for that matter. With terminal fonts there is a 512 character limit as things stand today. Far more than is needed for most languages. To render Japanese a gui app with the right fonts will be needed. I am not sure if there are any terminals in xorg that can handle CJK fonts but maybe. I am guessing that Firefox might be a viable alternative.

I have a status line for vim running in a linux terminal that shows me the unicode when I place the cursor under the character in question. For example it shows the first charater as U+96C4 which seems reasonable. I could look them up at http://www.unicode.org/charts/ which does render the actual character in a pdf which is viewable on the linux terminal. Given that I am left to ponder the possibility of a graphical interface for fidonet if and when this ever becomes a real issue.

I'll try a reply with the Japanese one with OpenXP next. I'm sure it will get munged since OXP does not support UTF-8. However, I do think it treats newsgroups/nntp differently. But I don't carry TUXPOWER as a nntp/newsgroup.

The Sylpheed gui is pretty good for most of this kind of messaging. Latvian would be my goto language if there was an audience. But alas, there are many more plentiful people who can manage English.

I don't think Fidonet will ever be an enduring messaging system. I think too many people operate with GUI apps, and Fidonet messaging has simply not reached that user-base.

THIS is a reply with OpneXP (a Windows console prog). The

It will never be an issue. I am sure most people will have
embraced chat-messengers like mastadon and matrix for their
community messaging interests. Fidonet relies too much on
    cooperating anarchists. :D

Odd, maybe it's rendering correctly for me because I'm SSH'd into my Linux console via Putty?

there are many more plentiful people who can manage English.

These days I have my doubts. Given so-called smart devices, most people these days can only handle emojii's or whatever the kids are calling them now. Speaking of which, aren't they unicode?

Fidonet messaging has simply not reached that user-base.

No doubt. However my plan is to stick with it for as long as I can still type. My keyboards have always gotten the most usage and I plan to keep it that way. How about you?

No. I wrote "Cooperating anarchists that can write in Latvian!" But then translating it back to english in google translate says: "With the cooperation of anarchists who can write in Latvian!" So I don't know, Latvian = 1 - Me = 0. :)
