Hi Skylar,
recently I've done similar search in order to find something that runs well on linux.
I came across SEMPOINT -- quite nice client that ran well in wine.
I didn't try it in win 10, but I've read somewhere on the nets here that it runs fine there -- you just need some tool for win16 compatibility. I can't remember the name though.

you could always run your own bbs and use THAT as a qwk reader.

I tried running it on my win 11 machine in compatibility mode for win 95 and the setup program wouldn't even load.
True. I ran Synchronet a decade ago. I didn't do much with it other than explore writing a door and a couple of minor custom mods. Nothing really useful, more for fun and learning.
And I've thought about doing so again. Although I have a dozen other projects at the moment and another two dozen that I would rather dig into. Not to mention working an extra 15 to 20 hours a week at one of the best jobs I could ask for, just because I want to. ;)

installing synchronet is really not a project. it takes minutes.

Yep! I think Synchronet is the easiest BBS I have ever set up. Took me almost five minutes (although I will admit that I did not do anything special with networked msg bases or anything like that.) Just a plain jane setup of 6 nodes.

I was able to install and launch SEMPOINT in Windows 11
using https://github.com/otya128/winevdm
I imported a QWK packet and will give it a try. Thanks for
mentioning it.

I think you overlooked me saying that I had Synchronet running a decade ago.
You also don't know me at all. Everything is a project. If or when I install SBBS again, it won't be just to read messages. :D
Ftn is pretty easy to setup;you just get the numbers right.
Yeah, it's pretty easy to set up. But IMO it's good to put some time into customizing it so that it's not a stock setup, and that is the project.

All controlled with a batch file called SVC.BAT which was originally written by a guy named Gee Wong and totally bastardized and modsified
by moi... it would do system functions in the order on the command line like:

I hate to say that I have forgotten everything I know about Ftn. Getting old sux.
I was in Fidonet between the years of 1988-1997 and everything was DOS-based back then and run with magnanimous batch files (I recently found some of my old setups on floppies.) :)

If you are running in on *nix and have to compile it, that can also become a project.
I'm running Synchronet on Linux and it was very easy to compile, following instructions on the wiki.
Pretty amazing that you could run an node in a world-wide data network
using a batch file to accept callers, run maintenance, send and receive
new mail, and do everything on a DOS machine.
it's not about being old, it's just because you forgot what you didn't practice. I've forgotten tons of things.

Love the documentation on the wiki. Just wish I could find what
I needed on my own, LOL. But I'm learning and enjoying as I go.

You know wiki.synchro.net has a search box? :-)
