• Migration to Windows

Having run WWIV for about 3 years now on a Linux instance, I found myself constantly struggling to get doors working right, and just some features of WWIV itself. So I decided to fire up Hyper-V, bring it back "in house" as it were (previously was using Oracle Cloud) and run Windows 10 32-bit. I must say, already I'm enjoying it more.

Perhaps it is just nostalgia, as I remember running this under DOS for so many years back in the 80s and 90s -- but it sure does seem to run a heck of a lot smoother, and is easier to debug, under Windows than it was under Linux.

Exactly why I'm still running it on Win10 w32.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried running WWIV in a docker container? That might make things easier for people running Linux.

I find myself running more and more Linux VMs and things in some stuff in docker these days. I agree that it is generally much more difficult to do even basic things in Linux vs Windows. The security stuff is what drives me crazy with all the chmod, su, this and that. Just a pain to do basic stuff - but it is a solid platform. Sort of reminds me of OS/2. Not as user friendly as Windows, but did great for DOS multitasking.

I guess that is the trade off.

I literally migrated from Win 10 32-bit to Win 11 64 bit with NTVDMx64 this morning. New computer and running great so far.

I have never been able to get door games to run in Linux with DOSEMU. I'd like to do that, but never got it to work.

And I still have never gotten 16 bit door games to work in 64 bit Windows, even with NTVDMx64. They work great in Synchronet. I even tried NetFoss and still can't get them to work over here on WWIV.

So I just installed 32 bit door games, and those work just fine.

    A Sysop's job is never done! :)

Have you managed to find a 32-bit version of Food Fight? Of all the games I used to love playing on BBS's back in the day, that was my absolute favorite!
