So I am bing watching LOST again and it's just as good as when it came out. I have to laugh because the actor, Terry O'Quinn who plays John Lock moved to Maryland when he met a lady who has a farm and teaches riding. It's Woodgait farm where I used to go riding with my ex wife. Well Mr. O'Quinn fell in love with her when he was there learning how to ride for a movie role. Long story short, she closed down her farm to the public and it was private after that. I was riding my bike on the Northern Central RR trail with my best friend Joel Bernstein when Terry O'Quinn passed us going South. My friend Joel yelled out, "Hey are you lost?" O'Quinn laughed at us.

lol. I didn't realize he lives around here. I also didn't realize Christina Applegate used to live so close to where I am now. Like 5 minutes away, but she lived there many years ago with a previous husband.

There are lot's of characters here on Cape Cod too. I live in a small rural area on top of the cape in West Barnstable. It's like Mayberry in the winter. Just like Ocean City, the population increases temporarily by 75%. Now it's nice and quiet. I don't have a mailbox but a PO box at the post office which is like a social gathering place. I was leaving the post office the other day and my arms were full of boxes. This guy with a beard was holding the door open for me laughing and I recognized his as Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith. He lives down a dirt road near the package goods store close to the waterfront. Writers, musicians, politicians in peaceful quietude.

It is good to hear that small towns like that still exist around the country. Our area just keeps getting more and more development which I could do without.
That is really cool that you ran into Tom Hamilton.. :) I have met several famous people over the years, but never just running into them in the local area. Always at some type of gathering, concert, etc.

I did run into one of our old governors at a lunch place in Baltimore once many years ago. I can't stand the guy, so since I can't say anything nice to him, I ignored him.

I grew up in Harford Co. BelAir used to close on Wednesday like that was an ordinance when all the shops were closed. Bought my first guitar at Beshore's furnature store. Passed my driver's test in BelAir. All the farms seem to be giving in to development. That Gov of MD that you speak of, is he Irish and plays guitar?

Yes, and from what I understand is now employed over at the social security office in MD.

What has really grown the population around here is the government and all the companies that work for the government. There are very few private companies left around here of any size other than McCormicks in Hunt Valley and T.Rowe Price. All the other financial companies moved to Delaware.

There are also a large percentage of people that work for the proving grounds at the military base. Lots of contractor companies around there. People that live around me I would say at least 60% of them work for the goverment or a government contractor of some sort for the military. There are also many hospitals in he region, so that would be the second largest employeer.

It just seems like we went from rural growing up to starting to turn into cities. Hopefully that trend stops and even better, starts to reverse.

It used to be that the military i.e., Edgewood Arsenal and Aberdeen Proving Grounds were the biggest employers in HC besides Bata Shoe Company. Hell, before I was 16 I would be bagging groceries for tips at the Edgewood Commisary. On payday, Army wives would be there with kids in tow getting four or five carts of groceries. I could make $200 a day bagging and taking the carts to the car to load them up. Even as a teenager we had a cover band and I was playing gigs at the officer's or enlisteman's clubs. And, I was born in the Aberdeen Proving ground hospital :O

Wow, small world that you were born in Aberdeen Proving ground Hospital. I wasn't aware they had a hospital. Upper Chesapeake has gotten HUGE and probably one of the larger employers in Harford County. County wise, I think the proving grounds are still the largest employer in the county - but these days people out here work all over the place especially with remote working.

I don't know the exact numbers, but there is a high number of people in my neighborhood that work for the military and or state/federal government. I'm the oddball working in the private sector if you can call healthcare private. That is up for debate especially in MD where they still have the medicare waiver.

I forgot about Under Armour which is local, too. I hear that is a really bad place to work from a few friends that have worked there. T.Rowe, McCormicks, and Under Armour.

We lost the banks, Legg Mason, and Ballys which used to have a data center in Towson before it went bankrupt and kept their casinos and operations in New Jersey. At least we have lots of hospital networks, which I think is mainly due to the waiver. The national networks have no interest in them for that reason, which is a plus.

My mom was a publication coordinator for Martin as she had security clearance. Historically she worked as a secretary for the European Command during the occupation in Nuremberg after WWII.
She got tired of working out of our home in Edgewood and got a job with Westinghouse in Hunt Valley. This was when the Shah of Iran was trying to "Westernize" their country and they were installing Westinghouse defense systems. Cockeysville and Hunt Valley was innundated with Iranians who would then become isolated when the Ayotollah took over. I knew two Iranian brothers who owned an ice cream store (Your Father's Moustache) in Timonium who told me that their father was the chief of police in Tehran and he disappeared (snuffed out). Many could not go back but they went to school locally and became citizens. I knew a lady physician who went to Hopkins and she said that she loved her country but could not go back as being a woman, she could not be an equal. I cannot forget the day that my mom came home and said, "How would you like to live in Iran?" Westinghouse employees were going there too in an effort to build the Shah's defense systems. I jumped up and told her, "Wow! Yes!" I had visions of getting a motorcycle and riding to Israel at the time. Nice to be young and stupid. Of course you know the rest of the story...

That seems to be common where regardless of where the person is from, they love their country. The dislike isn't their country, but their government. I know people from many parts of the world and the theme is very much the same, including Iraq, Russia, Lebanon, and Isreal.

I grew up similar to being in a small town. I only knew what was directly around me. I honestly thought everyone in the world celebrated Christmas and all parents had off for the summer (since both of my parents were teachers).

Too bad later learned that was an exception to the rule, not the norm.

You can always tell people who travel - and I don't mean exotic travel either, but at least get outside of their town/city/state. They are the people who are more accepting, hold more holistic world views, are more tolerant in general.
