From Weatherman@11:1/101 to All on Tue Dec 10 07:29:58 2024

I was really tempted to buy a new Supermicro server last week.. There was a really good deal on Ebay for a 4U X11 Supermicro with 1TB ram for $1999. I held back because I wanted a different controller and technically don't need the entire server - but just the motherboard/RAM/CPUs. It wasn't that much more to get the entire thing ready to go, so I probably should have done it.

The other thing I keep going back and forth on is getting (1) or (2) server upgrades. Right now, I have (3) 4U Supermicros - (1) data server and (2) for VMware. Only (1) VMware runs at any given time - the other is a spare in case of a disaster. I rarely use it, so could likely get away with just (1) server upgrade especially since they already have lots of redundancy in them (dual power, etc).

I'm sure there will be more deals and I'll eventually figure out what I'm doing. I also need to get a bunch of SSDs (probably 8 1TB or 4 2TB SSDs) to make tiered storage again on the new setup.

Currently, I have a ton of 480GB SSDs wrapped into a 5TB raid array and another 8 6TB spinners for archive storage in VMware. Most of my stuff runs on the SSDs.

And my data server is down to 5TB free out of 110TB - so I also need more 14TB enterprise drives.. The life of a storage hoarder..
