I have a ham radio, but the manual sucks. I need to likely buy a more expensive radio instead of an uber cheapo one.

What did you get? It's likely that if it's a disposable you may be able to use Chirp to program it. Sucks, but it's really the only to sanely program those things.

It actually even works on name brand radios like Kenwood. Just be careful as some cables can brick the Yaesu's.

And did you finally get your license?

    Excellent! Congrats!

Do you know if any of your local repeaters have AllStarLink, EchoLink or IRLP?

IMO, cheap radios are awesome. Especially the Quansheng UV-K5 (also UV-K6 which is identical except the outside plastic). It has a custom firmware that adds on-screen DTMF decoding and a spectrum analyzer! And you can get this radio for $20-25.

The cheapie Chinese radios can be absolute trash, but also really really good. There isn't as much QC on them, so it's like luck of the draw. But, when you get a good one, they're usually louder than the expensive HTs and sometimes with better receive!
