Woot! Good luck! When you get your call, make sure to sign up for a DMR ID, too. You may not use/need it right away, but it takes some waiting to get so may as well sign up when you can :).

    That's great Matthew!

Amateur radio can be a lot of fun.

Julie and I have been doing a lot of POTA and SOTA activations this summer. Has been a nice way to get back outdoors since we kind of burned out on the Geocaching.

One of the nice things about radio, is there are so many different modes of operation and frequensies to work with.

Have actually been toying with attempting to resurrect a Packet Door, but I'm not sure is there is enough traffic in my area to make it worth while.

Is there a specific area you are interested in? HF? Repeaters? QRP? Digital modes? APRS?

    J..

maybe transfer bbs packets with another station?

Packet Radio is a thing. Yes.
In the past we used a Terminal Node Controller (TNC) as the interface between the PC and the radio. Some such as the AEA PK-232 have a rudumentary BBS built in. Today, I bet you can find some sort of arduino equivilent.

It's been decades, but sort of. Just need a high level digipeater to extend the range, but there are still many oput there. If you listen to the packet radio frequencies in your area, you will probably stil hear packet bursts.
We use 144.910MHz up this way, is likely different down there.
