When I was 14 and working at the supermarket, you never made fun ofI had a philosophy professor in college whose specialty was linquistics. He would teach at American University in Shanghai and could speak Chinese. He made an excellent comparison of the culture to us and his thesis was that they had a deeply instilled art of manners and we have lost ours. His point; manners are rules of behavior at first but then they become transcendent whereby you realise that you aren't the "center of the universe" but that there are other people that exist besides yourself. I was taught manners when I was a child and I did so with my daughters when I raised them.

I have not been at the college I am teaching at long, so I have not witnessed anything that got my attention. In fact, most of the students I run across have pretty good manners. Social skills - somewhat lacking - but manners.
