    RE: Anyone been to Azerbaijan?

    Hi, all.

In a few weeks I'll be heading out to Azerbaijan for a gymnastics competition my son is entering - I've never been that far over before so does anyone have any top tips for me (preferably based on experience :)

I've been looking to learn a few words but, man, is Azerbaijani different to English! I'll be lucky to learn 1-10 and the vital beef / lamb / chicken / fish by the time I get there. Even "please" is a bit tricky...

    "Sag ol" in advance!

Wow, that's awesome! Sadly, that is one place I have not been. But I bet it will be an experience. How long will you be there for? With him entering a competition, do you have to arrange the travel and stay yourself, or will you be with a team/group? Does your son already know someone from there?

We're going out there for a week, there are about a dozen of us going which we have semi-coordinated on booking. The annoying thing is they haven't announced the teams (who is competing / sub / not going) but we had to book our flights early to secure them so there could be some seriously awkward times if not everyone gets in.

We had a lovely apartment booked for us all to share, 6 bedroom thing, but they cancelled on us. I said I'd never use booking.com again but the next place we booked, an actual hotel this time, was through them as well. Not after this time, though!

My son will be (we hope and presume) travelling with the other competitors, in some kind of competitors' village thing. We are keeping out of his way :)

Not sure what to do if he doesn't get in, would be a shame to waste thousands of pounds already sunk into our trip. I expect my wife would not want to leave him here while we went to see Azerbaijan without him, though!
