The minisplit in my office runs all year - even in the winter. BetweenI am thinking of mini-splits. I see that there are some "do it yourself kits" Massachusettes is giving discounts for their purchase. Actually, weather here on Cape Cod is somewhat different than the "mainland" due to geographically pushing out to the Gulf Stream. I've only had one good snow in the last 5 years to try out my Subaru Forester with... and those OEM tires suck :O
the southern exposure and heat from the PC, it has to stay on unless it
gets REALLY cold (like low teens/single digits).

Mini-splits are awesome. They are incredibly quiet (both the outsideWhat do you know about the "do it yourself" units? Did you have a professional install yours?
and inside), and also very inexpensive to run. They almost always run
using the variable speed compressor unless the temp different inside is
so much that it doesn't need the compressor at all. I would say that
95% of the time, it runs, even in the winter on AC. I have never used
or needed the heat setting on it.
I was going to get a unit that supported two inside wall mounts, but
ended up doing just one. Where you really get value is using one
outdoor unit to many wall mounted units. You can get perfect temps in
each room and they all use the same outdoor unit.
No matter how hot, mine will freeze me out of this room is I turn it
down enough. All while being silent. My PC makes way more noise - you literally can't hear it at all.

Normally I'm a DIY'er. In this case, I decided against it and used theThanks. If you ever need a "cracker jack" electrician, HVAC, security person in your area. I have a friend, Mark Thiele, who bought an old train station in Harford Co. and restored the main building and then gutted the barn making it into his home. He does historic restorations. He has always repaired my guitar amps as he used to have an electrical repair shop for televisions etc. He does carpentry and plumbing too.
same HVAC company that replaced our entire system a few years before.
If I was installing in a garage, shed, etc, I would do it myself. The
issue is the DIY kits you will end up with either too much or too little lines. It just won't look that clean. Not to mention, mine was on the
2nd story and required drilling into the side of the house.
They did a really clean job and it looks nice.

I would love to play the keyboards. I would like to be the next vince clarke or chris lowe.I'm having fun with it emulating some 80's stuff i.e., Depeche Mode, Human League etc., yet I am doing more ambient stuff and trying to make more lush landscapes and space-type moods.
