then "73" and onto the next one. I am just surprised that FT8 is *so* popular considering you can't (as I understand, anyway) actually hold a conversation over it? And by that I mean chat about the weather,

It's probably that you don't have to actually do anything :). Not even call CQ! You just let the computer do it. Yeh I'm not sure the appeal of it either.. But, there is JS8.. which does let you send some short messages back and forth, from what I understand.

Are you restricted from putting up an antenna? I'm in an HOA and threw a

Na.. I have a 2m/70cm Jpole up already. I just have not figured out where to put the HF antenna, or how to feed it into the house, or who's going to do it :).

I have an off-center fed dipole that's supposed to be the "swiss army knife" of antennas, and I have some ladder/feed line, and I have a MFJ Deluxe Versa Tuner II. Hopefully with those things, I should have some ok results. But, still those kinks I mentioned to work out.

Yeah, that was kind of my take on it. I don't like to dump on other people's hobbies (those in glass houses should not throw stones) but if the computer could do the whole thing without my involvement I would stuggle to feel like I was participating. I know you have to get your setup right but it just feels like those mobile phone "idle games" where you basically succeed by opening the app and looking in on it every now and then...

Speaking of Field Day, have you seen that $300 antenna that ARRL is promoting and works on 6M and 10M? Wonder if it's worth it.

    No, details?

I find that a simple Random EF with a 9:1 works pretty good for my setup.
