As I may have mentioned, I am now the proud owner of a new iPhone 16e.

I am still getting to grips with it but one issue is that some of the
contacts are duplicated. I transferred data from my previous Android
phone (using the app). The problem seems to be that I now have two
sources for contacts: my Google account and iCloud. I assume I need
to choose and disable the other. As I now have an iPhone and iPad, my
thinking is to use iCloud. However, there are far more contacts in
Google than iCloud. Should I copy all the contacts from Google to
iCloud replacing duplicates then link the device to iCloud (only)? Am
I missing something? Or would I be better to delete the iCloud
contacts and transfer the Google contacts in their entirety?

I am also using the Google calendar (which I must have linked to my
iPad in the past) that results in all the birthdays etc being
duplicated. Is there a benefit in using Apple's calendar for
    consistency?

Am I right that Safari by default uses Google Chrome as its search
    engine? Is this okay?

    As always, any wisdom appreciated.

It works well, of course, but other options exist like Bing and DuckDuckGo.
I personally use ecosia which tries to offset carbon costs by planting
    trees.

    As always, any wisdom appreciated.

I've been using google for my contacts and calendar for many years on my devices. No issues detected so far :)

Use both? more duplication the better for backup.

In terms of pure megabytes, the amount of storage for these items must
be quite small - and probably not much of an issue on the device
handling both, and searching for contacts.

If you put whatsapp on it, it will hoover up these contacts and you will
    yet have another list.

And I'm also on MS Exchange Mail, another list.

And then, there is the lowly little contact list that lived on your SIM
    card.

    Is that still a thing?

Yes. If you wan't to avoid duplication, use one cloud account.
iCloud is reasonable if you have other iStuff. Sync other devices
    to that using CardDAV.

Similar for calendar except CalDAV. You can use Google Calendar or
    iCloud.

I sync contacts on iPhone, Android tablet (K9 mail), and
Thunderbird on Linux to a single NextCloud account using
    CardDAV.

Be aware that you can use Chrome browser on you iPhone (and iPad)
if you prefer. It still uses Apple's Webkit so not fully
Google. I use Firefox, so it syncs with other devices. The main
disadvantage is that some links (eg from Apple Mail, or wallet
    additions) open in Safari anyway.

Thanks. I have just exported my Google Contacts (550 of these) to a
vCard file. I then imported this file into iCloud. I received a
message to say some of the cards could not be read and the number
imported is 361. Any idea why this would happen, and is there a way of identifying the missing 189 contacts without going through them all
    one by one?
