• Phones with SD card capability

    From Woody@harrogate3@ntlworld.com to uk.telecom.mobile on Fri Jul 18 11:11:14 2025
    From Newsgroup: uk.telecom.mobile

    I was in our local O2 shop yesterday looking at an Honor 200 or 400. I
    had a Huawei until last year (battery died) which I found very good -
    until 'The Donald' stopped Google selling the Play Store to them.

    However with Honor now having been sold off they appeal to me. The only
    issue is a memory expansion (micro SD) card slot which I know Honor do
    not provide.

    In chatting with a salesperson I was told that other manufacturers do
    not provide the memory expansion facility either - which surprises me.
    Yes I know I can get an Honor model with 512GB on board, but is the
    comment about 'other manufacturers not fitting such' true or not?

    Comment or thoughts on an Android phone I might buy would be
    appreciated. Note I do not want any iPhone, and I am uneasy about
    Samsung being overpriced and stuffed full of unwanted rubbish. My price
    limit would be around -u250.

    Certainly gone from the latest Samsung models. Sony still appears to
    have them..

    I bought a second hand S20 recently. Little more expensive than your
    price point but with a single slot for 2nd SIM or memory card.

    most of the rubish seems to be from google rather than Samsung...

    Out of 223 Samsung Android phones currently being sold today
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>

    Out of those 223, 165 have the sd slot, which is 74% of Samsung phones.
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sMakers=9&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2&idCardslot=1>

    As for Sony's 22 models currently sold today, 100% have the sd slot.
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sMakers=7&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sMakers=7&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2&idCardslot=1>

    There are things a phone with a card in the sd slot can do that are
    impossible to do any other way - so I agree it's a critically important
    basic hardware feature if you want to make the most of your phone.

    I think the best way to figure out which phones have sd slots is gsmarena.

    This Android search shows 2,114 Android phones with the sd slot included.
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2&idCardslot=1>

    That's out of 3205 Android phones (if I remove the sd slot criteria).
    <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>

    That means 66% of Android phones out there still have the sd slot hardware.

    Sadly GSMArena is not a good place to go for system information as it is written around US market products which are often different not only
    from UK market products but EU products as well!

    Example: I had a smartphone - can't remember make or model - but it was designated as having Gorilla 3 glass and a (magnetic) compass. The UK
    market version did not have G3 nor a compass as well as a couple of
    other facilities.
    Currently I have a Motorola G8(pwr) which is supposed to have wi-fi
    calling, but wi-fi calling will not work on my SP's system with this
    phone (supposedly waiting for Moto to produce a software upgrade - this
    on a phone just two years old.)

    You need to look up the specific model number of the phone, not the
    marketing name. ie SM-GTxxxx not Samsung Galaxy Whatever. GSMArena
    typically says on their pages where the different models differ.

    Although not always super clearly - eg here's the Galaxy Note 4: https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_4-6434.php

    - some of the variants are Snapdragon and some Exynos, but it doesn't

    The phone has wifi calling, just your provider has chosen not to enable it, which has to be done on a per-network / per-model basis. That's a perennial problem with VoLTE / wifi calling.

    Sorry Theo, wrong. Wifi calling is active on GiffGaff (which is the O2 infrastructure) and some phones will work and others won't. Motorola
    have specifically said that my G8(pwr) and a couple of other models need upgraded software from Moto who are seemingly not supplying it.

    Wifi calling is a feature of the phone if it works on other networks, but
    each network has to enable it for a given phone. That can be an OTA profile (iPhones, Pixels) but some phones (Qualcomm based?) need(ed) config in the baseband firmware which means a network specific firmware update. This used
    to be common for older Samsungs which had a different OS image for each network, with the network's apps and language pack, including the carrier's modem firmware. Not sure what Motorola do but as it's a Qualcomm chip maybe that's why there is a separate firmware requirement. If the network never
    sold that model of phone it's unlikely they will ship firmware for it.

    VoLTE/VoWifi is a mess, especially with the 3G switch off which makes VoLTE more critical.

    I agree with Theo. Back in the day when I had a Moto on Three it took ages before Wifi calling was enabled on it because Three were rolling it out in stages to different phones.

    Motorola
    have specifically said that my G8(pwr) and a couple of other models need upgraded software from Moto who are seemingly not supplying it.

    This doesn't make sense? Motorola and Moto are the same company.

    Bummer. I saw Theo's responses that the model numbers are critical.

    An example is T-Mobile USA gave every postpaid customer a free Samsung
    Galaxy A32-5G in April of 2021 for every line they had (I got four) which
    was the US model "SM-A326U" where all the "U" (USA?) models baseband
    updates can no longer be rooted, and yet, apparently, the EU/UK models can (apparently) still be rooted.
    <https://xdaforums.com/t/is-my-almost-3-year-old-t-mobile-network-unlocked-samsung-galaxy-sm-a326u-bootloader-still-unlockable-and-hence-is-my-sm-a326u-still-unrootable.4638955/>

    Luckily, the UK/EU governments have forced the OEMs to be more transparent
    on benchmarks so it works both ways in that the EPREL database is
    fantastic; but it only includes models sold in the UK/EU but not in the
    USA.

    I love that, finally, we have benchmarks where all devices are treated the
    same so the clever marketing organizations can only make lame excuses now.

    It's great that the UK/EU force the OEMs to finally come clean on specs. Someday the US may catch up to EU/UK benchmark regulations; but maybe not.

    For the last two or three incarnations we (my wife and I) have bought
    Motorola with real twin sim and sd card capability. Be wary that some
    have a slot that is an either or.

    Change phones and just transfer the SD card over. I use a non-google
    camera app that puts the photos/videos readily where I want them.

    The last couple we've bought from Argos. Perhaps not the best phones
    in the world but excellent value for money and not too much bloatware.
