Presumably because he had been chosen to betray Jesus. Someone was needed
who could be relied upon to prize money over the lives of his friends.

Yet I know of an accountant who went to prison for stealing from their client but continued as an accountant after their imprisonment. This happened some years ago and as far as I know, hasn't been tempted since.
If repentance is true why do you consider they can't return to the profession they know best, whether clergy, treasurer or accountant?

I am glad to hear of the man's repentance and that he was given a second chance. However even if one is prepared to give a second chance when it
is only money that is involved, I remain unconvinced that a second
chance is appropriate when another person's spiritual well-being is
involved. For example, churches have been rightly criticised for just
moving paedophile clergy to a new location.

On a side note, if Judas was a treasurer, why did Jesus let him continue
in that role if he was stealing?

    To give him enough rope?

Fair enough.-a-a Deacons are held to a higher standard so there may be something in that.

Deacons and bishops, so the full range of clergy.
