An apocryphal gospel, the gospel of Peter, claims that Joseph of
Arimathea washed Jesus' body before wrapping it in a shroud and putting
it in the tomb. Apparently this is contrary to Jewish custom. Although
dead bodies are usually washed before burial, in the case of someone who
has died by violence, this is not done. The blood on the body is
supposed to be an integral part of the body and because washing would
remove the blood, someone who has died by violence is not washed.
In 1998 someone studied the Turin Shroud and concluded that the body it enclosed had been washed - I'm not sure what the evidence was for that conclusion. However a more recent stody by Dr Kelly Kearse, an
immunologist from John Hopkins University has re-studied the shroud and concluded the very opposite.
The evidence lies in "serum haloes" which only became visible on the
Shroud under ultra-violet light.
Of course this latest conclusion, even if correct, does not prove that
the Shroud once covered the body of Jesus. C-14 dating of the Shroud
seems to argue against genuiness. However at least the argument that it contradicts Jewish custom is no longer valid.
God bless,
