I'll call them that for now to be polite.Last Wednesday we moved on to a
very nice campsite overlooking Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales.
It was a great site. Fantastic views. Good facilities. Very friendly and helpful owners.
We don't object to children, but the site is advertised as a 'strictly
child free' site.
Thursday morning I woke up in the campervan, dreaming I could hear a
child's voice. I noticed that our security curtain behind the front
seats was twitching. I thought, blimee, Maggie's up early, but when I
looked across to her bed, she was still in it!
I got up, pulled back the curtain and there was a child of about 5 or 6
sat in the passenger seat playing with my tools on the dashboard, and
making 'brrrmm, brrrmm' noises.
I told him to get out, of course. He looked at me as if I was some sort
of ogre, but he did clamber out, over two full water containers and a
long handled dustpan and brush, which was the way he got in through the passenger door.
Okay I should have locked up, but on a secure camping club site behind a lockable electric gate I shouldn't need to.
It seems that a family of three kids, two women and a bloke had moved in
next door, with a caravan and a van full of hedge cuttings.
During the day, I met up with the site owner and told him my story. He
passed it on to the bloke as a complaint whereupon I was verbally
assaulted by him. How dare I complain about his children! I tried to
tell him that he shouldn't even be there with children, but he didn't
want to know about that!
That's when I made the mistake of saying, "I think you are a pikie!"
He absolutely hit the roof and had I not been sitting in my van talking
to him through the side window I think he would have hit me. So that definitely identified him as one.
"How dare you call me a pikie. That is being racist! You are a racist!"
Well, pikies are not a race. I have had very bad experiences with them
in the past. One haulier I worked for had every windscreen in his fleet smashed in our yard because he threw them off his land.
On another occasion they stole about 300 gallons of diesel from our
fleet of lorries, and even the exhaust off my transit van.
They are itinerant thieves, not a race.
I pulled off the site. I didn't want my Hymer windscreen smashed. They
are boodly expensive.
Got a letter of apology from the site owner this evening. He finally got
rid of them by changing his gate code while they were out on Saturday.
They can't get back in. He says he won't ever be taking any more
telephone bookings.
I have rebooked for four nights in September. Those views over
Wharfedale are beautiful!
