• It's Not Cricket

I watch a fair bit of white ball cricket, the hundreds and T20s on
YouTube, but I was inspired to go and see Yorkshire beat Lancashire live
at York Sports Centre on Tuesday. (We won by 7 wickets.)

What amazed me is how far and fast these lads can hurl a ball from the outfield. As a warm-up they play a game where they each wear a baseball
glove in one hand and wield a baseball bat in t'other. Blimee can they
hit and catch well, a cricket pitch apart! It's fast, and furious.

Also watching cricket online gives a false impression of the length of
the wicket, the speed of the bowling and the the distance to the
outfield, due to the telescope effect. All are far greater. I was most impressed. Cricket was never that good in my day, nor as aggressive.

I've now joined the cricket club as an elderly disabled observer!

Went back yesterday to see Yorkshire get beaten by Somerset by 6
wickets. Bummer. But it wasn't the same team. All our main players were resting or away. I think they underestimated the strength of Somerset.

I was going to say everything is bigger when you see it in the flesh, but maybe that doesn't sound quite right now I am seeing it. My wake up call was an F1 car, they don't look that big on the telly but seeing one you can touch made it much more impressive. Also a 100m race looks like a marathon to me now, I don't run a whole lot these days. :-)

Certainly not like the sort of cricket we played in school.

When bat hit ball (or vice versa) I still unforget the feel of the impact.

A ball to the nads would require a visit to the nurse who would examine the area, while not enjoyable at the time it was the stuff of legend for a long time
    afterwards.

Being at school in Harrogate, one of our PE teachers, Mr Knowles, had a
friend who played for Yorkshire. Once a summer term he would come along
and bowl at us as they would in a normal match. That was scary compared to
our usual exceptional incompetence at bowling.

Heading to The Hundred matches at Headingley next Saturday, hoping for a
couple of exciting innings and to avoid any travel chaos as a result of it being the last day of horse racing at York too.

I've been to Old Trafford a couple of times but not seen any warming up or properly gauged the pitch size.

I think I can still run but in reality it is more of a trot, and yes aches appear almost immediately. :-)
