No, not the motorbike, that would be on topic.

It turns out, if you have a hornet's nest in the chimney [1], then they
don't like it very much if you light the fire. Who knew?

The trouble is, about 1 per minute finds its way down the chimney and
into the room. My zapping tennis racket thing has been very busy.

[1] luckily not fully blocking it

are they local ones or the Asian jobs?

we had bees in a chimney. I sealed the fireplace (a little one not
inglenook) with bin liners and they fucked off. Presumably no updraught to aerate the swarm. Might need more substantial material to defeat the
    hornets' chompers.

Sounds like you just need a bigger fire.

Congratulations! You are now part of the cycle of life.

    According to Wikipedia:

In temperate areas, the nest dies over the winter.

And I have found this to be the case. While hornets and yellow
jackets do frequent damaged fruit in my apple orchard, which can be
annoying during harvest, they also prey on pest insects, so I consider
their presence to be a net benefit. I use leather gloves [obligatory
MC content] to pick the fruit. You never know how many of the buggers
are hiding in a hole on the back side, but the best countermeasure for
a nest is patience. They are not long for this world.
