Took the block outside and attacked it with the pressure washer, wire
brush and a boatload of brake cleaner.

It was as clean as it was going to get after I spent quite a few hours
    on it yesterday as well.

So I painted it. In strong wind, with aerosol cans. I had to hold them
about an inch away but it turned out ok.

The crank's ready to back in with new shells, as are the liners and
    pistons, camshaft etc.

It'll soon be ready to start all the timing fun.

Anyone know what those centrepunch marks are for? Some kind of QA
(checking for porosity?) on the casting?

What make and model is your tractor again?

I'm intrigued by the valvetrain side access covers, why is the #1
cylinder access different from the other 3? Obviously something
external is mounted there. I'm also wondering (perhaps you already
mentioned) whether you bored the cylinders and are fitting O/S pistons
    & rings?

No idea about the punch marks, but I like the idea that they were
checking for casting irregularities. There are many old tractor forums
[1] where I am certain that question could be answered.

    [1] e.g., https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/

Yeah there's a gear on the camshaft there that drives the tacho and the injection pump - it made things very awkward trying to unstick the cam follower that was hiding in there.

The whole thing was actually painted red (where there is actually any
paint remaining). As far as I can tell they were only ever grey all
    over, grey/red, or gold red.

I'm not going down the conkers route so it doesn't really matter.

I've only seen the gold painted engines with grey bodywork and a cursory google agrees

seems there were several versions of "grey"

Good progress today. Got the crank, camshaft, liners and pistons fitted. Surprisingly I don't think I've made any mistakes.

Tomorrow will be mostly torquing bolts and fitting the camchain. Maybe
the sump too but that needs cleaning and painting.

    Here we go.
All pictures are an interpretation. Either you interpret what you see
and put it on paper or canvas or some kind of optical device records an
image. Without interpretation it would just be a collection of pretty
colours but your brain has learned to create a mental image for you
which you then associate with other things you have seen. Could be that
what you see as a tractor, I see as an elephant but we agree what it is
and does. Also colour, what I see as red, maybe you see as blue but we
just agree to call that colour red.
It takes a lot of practice to analyse what you see .

Could be a tad tricky to regulate.
I just don't believe anything I see on internet any more.
Is it just me or are there a lot more Apollo space photos circulating
    on the internet recently?
