Today's entry: engine hoist balancing thingy.

What I had before was rather sketchy, this is the opposite. Bloody awful
job cleaning the sludge off this lump though.

Am I halfway through the job yet? Not sure, Some bits (one kingpin/axle,
one piston/conrod) have been assembled and even painted where necessary.
    Lots more cleaning/painting to do.

I can't quite work out what the tool is, from that picture. Is it the
    blue thing?

Yersh. I recall one of your previous posts about getting the engine
out, and it all seemed a) rather Heath Robinson and b) having huge
    potential for catastrophe

    Yep

So, basically its a spreader[1] - but I'm not sure what the windy-handle
thing does? Also the chains seem a bit random?
I would be grateful for a bit more explanation plz

The screw allows the balance point to move. Simon only used 2 of the
    4 chain attachment points.

I like the use of stacked nuts as spacers, if there's one thing a
huge bucket or random nuts is good for, it's that.

How far into the block do the bolts with the nut spacers on go?

('Cos all the weight is on the "engaged" thread so you'd want more than
    just a few turns.)

Once had occasion to visit a factory in Rotterdam where they re-furbish

complete engine in bits and very clean. If you are wondering what your next

    Dunno, maybe 1/2"[1], I'm sure there's enough.

    Don't.

I would love one. I've spent most of today cleaning the block and other
    stuff, I'm still not done.

I do have an old dishwasher (about 2ft away from that photograph coincidentally) and keep thinking about making it into a parts washer. Allegedly it's quite easy. No way it would take that block though.
