• OT: Responsibility of credit agency following ID Theft/fraud

    From YTC#1@ytc1@ytc1.co.uk to uk.rec.motorcycles on Mon Jul 21 09:41:01 2025
    From Newsgroup: uk.rec.motorcycles

A credit account was opened in my name and address, at the same time as
    a failed one for Jean.

The company were very quick to respond by claiming they have locked and
closed the accounts when I rang them.
(TBH I was surprised how they took my word for it on a phone call).

I queried on what steps they took to verify an ID when using an account
and they listed the usual utility bills, bank statements and drivers
    licence.

I asked that they to tell me which document(s) had been used, so I could identify where I have been lax. This they are refusing to do.

Does anyone know if they are obliged to let me know, or am I wasting my
    time and energy pursuing this?

I was amused when they sent me an email of how to protect myself and
included a link that Tbird identified as
    ---8<

    Link Mismatch Detected
The link you just clicked seems to lead to another site than what the
link text indicated. This is sometimes used for tracking whether you
clicked the link, but it could also be a scam.

The link text indicated that the link would lead to
support.marisota.co.uk, but it leads to eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com.

No, I don't think they have to say what they checked in detail, the various databases etc

Prior to the credit check, they will need to tell you what documents are
used and most banks have a list on the website of acceptable documents, but
it will vary depending on the accoount and the amount of cash involved.

Can you get a list from the website of the institution involved?

Have you checked to see if a mail redirect has been set up on your address? This is often used to get hold of a driver's licence that many use to establish ID by asking you to upload a picture of the licence and yourself.

Presumably you became aware of the credit check via Credit Karma,
Clearscore or similar? These free services will connect to one of Equifax, Transunion or Experian. Have you checked them all?

No, I don't think they have to say what they checked in detail, the various databases etc

I'm not after the detail, just the document name/type, was it driving
licence? Utility bill? that is all.

Prior to the credit check, they will need to tell you what documents are

Well, according to their site https://support.marisota.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/360002412370-How-do-I-apply-for-a-personal-credit-account

    ---8<
Credit is subject to status and will depend on our assessment of your financial circumstances - your details will be referred to a credit
reference agency as part of the registration process. We also ensure
that your details match the electoral roll.
    ---8<

Can you get a list from the website of the institution involved?
    just an electoral role check????

Have you checked to see if a mail redirect has been set up on your address?
Doubt it, I discovered the issue because mail arrived with the credit
    account details :-)

(And a failed check letter for Jean), and as it was (apparently) done
via electroal register we can see why it failed :-)

This is often used to get hold of a driver's licence that many use to establish ID by asking you to upload a picture of the licence and yourself.

Interesting ploy, but don't you need photo ID/utility bill to set up a redirect?

Presumably you became aware of the credit check via Credit Karma,
Clearscore or similar? These free services will connect to one of Equifax,

Nope (see above), but I have now signed up to Clearscore. Ged I have
    fucking good credit!

Transunion or Experian. Have you checked them all?

Experian seems to forward to Transunion, which is US based? (Or at least
did last night, seems to be ok again now.... more form filling ....)

Ta, I'll bear that in mind depending on their next response. For Jean's

I predict there will be a few moments of "you can't make this up"
coming. I once had to explain to my bank why I wasn't prepared to
give them the personally identifying information they were asking for,
on a call that THEY PLACED TO ME.

Don't you know they've already got their hands full rounding up people
for speaking their minds AKA terroism? Be careful, they'll get you
    for wasting police time.

Now I'm probably on some sort of list and will get thrown out of the

Well, today I received a letter telling me the account I had opened was

This was dated the 16th. 2 days before I received the open account

coming. I once had to explain to my bank why I wasn't prepared to

Well, it was more of a light hearted paraphrasing of late 70's graffiti than
a deep reflection of my views on Western Democracy (what Mao referred to as
'Old Democracy'). I do however have significant doubts about its ability to
withstand the effects of populist politicians. eg. the rise of the likes of
Farage,Orban, Wilders, Trump etc. If you can convince people that one kind
of washing powder is better than another then convincing them via social
media that all our problems can be attributed to one group, is not that
difficult apparently.(It's been done before of course).
I am not convinced that Mao's 'New Democracy' is the solution either.

    It's a never ending battle.

Back in 1968 when Enoch Powell did his 'rivers of blood' speech, Heath
had the moral stature to sack him from the shadow cabinet immediately,
and effectively isolate him. But there were an awful lot of white
working class people who agreed with Powell at the time, and had the
tories instead incorporated his views into their position, the Britain
of the 1970s would have been a very different and much scarier place.

Every era requires people with the strength and moral character
required to stand up to the siren calls of the populists and face them
down. And that character is usually only apparent in retrospect (e.g.
    Heath, as above).

Starmer is doing exactly the reverse, by trying to show that he's even
    nastier than Farage.

What is desperately needed is PR. With it, there's a good chance that
the left wing will prevail. Without it, it's a choice between three
right-wing parties, the Tories, Reform, and "Labour".

Thanks for adding that. I'm not a Telegraph subscriber so I've no idea
why I was able to see it without a paywall banner coming up. Maybe
    clearing their cookies helps.

TLDR; Both of those letters lack sufficient detail to give any
confidence, let alone prove, who said the original quote. Like a lot of
these things: I suspect someone made a joke at a dinner party which was
then elaborated in the re-telling and attributed to someone famous. In
50 years time it will be David Beckham what done it.
