I like to think it's somewhat balanced by the fact I've never owned a
car and take public transport everywhere, and do take the train as far
as possible for longer-distance trips as well. In a couple of weeks
I'll be taking the sleeper from Bangkok to Chiang Mai instead of flying, >>> for example - maybe I'll do a little trip report for you, I'm sure
    you'll be fascinated.

I'd be fascinated; it'll be interesting to compare with the five sleeper
services I've used in four different countries (five if you count Scotland) >> over the last three years.

You have me beat; I use the sleepers in Romania regularly, including the international services to Moldova and Hungary/Austria, but it's been a
few years since I took any others.

I'm taking train number 9, which apparently has the newest ('Chinese
made') rolling stock; first class was fully booked already 3 weeks in advance, but 2nd Class AC was available - no private compartments but
flat beds with curtains. Very much looking forward to it, should be a
    fun experience...

    Over the last three years:

Night Riviera twice (once in each direction)
Caledonian sleeper northbound (highlander, though not as far as any
    highlands)
    PKP Warsaw - Budapest
FS Villa San Giovanni [*] to Turin
JR Sunrise Seto from Takamatsu - Tokyo

Also seated overnight journeys (I do not recommend!) on Caledonian sleeper,
and twice on ICE101 from Berlin to Wuppertal or K||ln.

[*] an absolute dump of a town, I recommend avoiding it.
