I am with news.eternal-september.org which has glitches but appears to
    work.

Hopefully you can move elsewhere in the next two years.

Looking at the source of your post (More > View Source in Thunderbird, something similar in most news clients), I see a third line that says:

    Path: nntp.eternal-september.org!eternal-september.org!feeder.eternal-september.org!fu-berlin.de!uni-berlin.de!individual.net!not-for-mail

which, reading right to left, shows how your message passed from you to
the news server I use (eternal-september), which suggests that you are
    using individual.net .

However, it looks as if they're addressing the message to users of both.

Which is very sad news; although I'm not currently a user, I'd always
intended to become one if the ones I do use shut down or become flaky. I
was using two - PlusNet's own (well, they outsourced to someone else,
but presented as if it was theirs), which closed down I think earlier
    this year, and eternal-september.

Time (well, well past time) for us to start looking round for another
one, though I don't think we'll find one as good/cheap as - according to
all its users, many of them here on UMRA - as
    NIN/"the Berlin server"/whatever is/has been.

Good of them to give that much notice. (Though it might cause some of us
to put off looking elsewhere as it seems a long way in the future. But
    time will pass quickly!)

I know that you and kosmo have contributed more recently to this thread but, here on <https://rocksolid-us.pugleaf.net/> the more recent posts haven't arrived yet. That's why I am replying to your messages here and not there.

They are obviously still working on it / playing with it / tweaking it because the front page I mentioned isn't there any more. But on the bare bones front page is a list on the left hand side listing "nodes" (I think (I'm not going to risk going back to find out while I have this connection)) and rocksolid-us is shown as working in beta testing mode.

So I went to https://rocksolid-us.pugleaf.net and lo and behold the sign-in button is there and my registration details from before still work. Which is how I come to be writing this. But I think it might be a while before everything becomes reliable and consistent. Hang on in there but keep on using alternatives for now, is what I'm going to do.

Yes, I was trying to as I had said earlier in the thread but couldn't
find a way to add a new profile and a search of help for "register"
    produced no results.

I was using the url <https://novabbs.pugleaf.net/login> which lets you
enter a userid and psw, but the last clickable button on the top line is LOGIN.

Then I tried the url that Nick had suggested a few days ago <https://rocksolid-us.pugleaf.net> and there is a REGISTER button now on
    the top line.

I had tried this link a few days ago but it was so slow to respond (it
wasn't much better today) that I think i gave up, or if I didn't I
hadn't noticed the REGISTER option. I also think that I had tried the
home page before, but again didn't see what I needed (it's my age you know).

Anyway I am now setup and once again thanks for the efforts in making
    this happen.

PS I don't know if these terse replies are your normal style, or maybe
I pissed you off with my riff on your name. Apologies if it was the
latter, but playing with words - especially of old (I'm 78 you know ?)
songs - is something we thrive on in UMRA.

Yes, E-S is free - I don't know why Ray Banana (yes that really is his
name) provides it, but it does seem to be very reliable - he even spends
a significant amount of time on it, e. g. tweaking the filters that keep
spam down - he posts a fair bit in e-s.support. e-s.test and e-s.talk
have much of the friendly feel (and wide range of subjects!) as UMRA, IMO.
If you've paid for Berlin, I guess you might as well continue to use it, though. You could use both, though that may depend on your news client:
for example, Thunderbird can use more than one news server, but treats
posts on the same newsgroup but from different servers as different
    (e. g. if you read a post under one server it will still show up as
unread under the other one). [Note that also, by default though you can
change it, Thunderbird doesn't store posts locally, even ones you've
marked as keep, so don't assume you'll still be able to read any kept
posts once a newsserver goes offline.] I don't know how other clients
behave (other than Turnpike, which did remember read/unread status
across servers [and newsgroups], and did keep [all] posts locally).

Pugleaf, who are the new guardians of Rocksolid and Novabbs have now opened up posting from their site. I did it by going to pugleaf.net and clicking the appropriate button at the top of the screen. You will need to input a user name, a password and a working email address.

Of course if you can't see any of this, just forget I said anything, okay?

Viewing this from Agent via ES: hmmm... a bit disappointed that it doesn't display my email address as per ES but it's a start, eh?

    Nick

You can edit the 'From Name' field in your profile.

    Display Name Format Options:
rCo If you enter only a name (e.g., 'John Doe'):
the header will be: 'John Doe <noreply@$this.site>'
rCo Set custom format: 'My Name <my-name@mail.local>'

Thanks for that, Billy G! I shall have a go at that later.

    Following up...

I tried that and it looked easy enough but until I look at this posting I won't know if anything has changed. When I pressed the button to update the user name the response concerned an incorrect password. The only option to enter a password appears to be in the Change Password box below the display name box.

Maybe I should mention that, though I've been using usenet since the last century, I've never tried to get under the hood, so to speak. To me it's a black box system (connect it up and it goes) so I might not be the type of user pugleaf is working for.

    Thanks again,

    Nick

    which one am I using?

If I am reading the headers correctly I think you are using >>news.individual.net

I am with news.eternal-september.org which has glitches but appears to >>work.

Hopefully you can move elsewhere in the next two years.
OK I just registered. Should I move now? It seems to be free but I
have 2 years and did pay, in May wasn't it?

Does your newsreader allow you to receive from multiple hosts? When I
was with PlusNet I set Agent to pick up from both Plusnet and Eternal
September and it worked fine. Any posts not retrieved from one would
usually be found by the other. So why not keep both for now?

fairly simple, you must enter your actual password in the field to send
    an update.

Ah. as you already found out:
the subdomain novabbs.pugleaf.net does not allow registration
but rocksolid-us.pugleaf.net does ;) they (the databases) are not linked together. so one login will one work at the specific URL.

We have no data back up from old novabbs installs.
    Maybe that's what confused you.
You may have registered with original novabbs.com but the owner died.

I'm not sure if I close Agent now that I can get back on.Login to https://news.individual.net/selfcare.php is not working.
