In some ways that's a bit of a disappointment. Not the end in tears
part for it is written that anything that happens to the Grundys will
end in tears or worse.

Knowing to how much terror the criminal overlords in prison had
subjected George and noting how quiet that story had become[1] I
presumed that George had submitted to the will of the gang and was
being set up for a life of crime outside. Amber, I surmised, was a
"ho" from the harem of groomed and trafficked girls being controlled
by the outside gang and was being loaned to George to keep him in
their sight and under their control.

I'm not sure quite how much more plausible the real story is...
