We've heard plenty of references to Hilda, Peggy's cat over the years
but I must have missed, or forgotten hearing any previous mention of
    Tortoise. Have I?

    Yes.

They had a naming competition, with "high stakes" for the winner (though
can't remember what) and in the end went with Tortoise which I think was suggested by a child but can't remember which. The cat is a
    tortoiseshell, I believe.

Not sure I've been that much help. Another, better-informed umrat will

Competition was in September / October 2024. Suggested by Jack Archer. Information courtesy of Chris Fish (ambridgereporter.org.uk). I think
it is about the last time it was mentioned. It was a Grange Farm feral
cat found by Pip so I am surprised it has been domesticated.

I want to say Poppy named it. I think she was part of a litter that
someone found. Henwee and his mate IIRC. That naming plot went on for way
too long. it wasnrCOt funny and it wasnrCOt clever.

The stakes? Long forgotten - though only discovered a couple of weeks
ago, that at my 2022 hearing test, the audiologist failed to note I have
very narrow ear canals, so IrCOve been missing a great deal of life till now!
Thought my marbles had gone walkabout sometimes!

Surely marbles cannot go far if the canals are narrow?

Anyway I tend to think it is my hearing these days and then the Good
wife says she does not understand what the television character said so
I turn on the sub-titles because the music drowned out the information.

Both of us were annoyed watching Six Minutes to Midnight where a couple
of important conversations were in German and there were no subtitles on screen. That I do not comprehend. I cannot recommend the film as it
appeared to be a total indulgence for Eddie Izzard.

Sadly the author became disenchanted in January when Neil's anniversary
story about his amended parentage story distorted the space time continuum.

I am working on something similar but have found The Archers wiki is
seeking to do something similar as well (but inaccurately) so am not
sure if I will proceed to put it online.

I have had the subtitles on for years - mainly because it lets me pay
less attention (I suddenly wonder "what just happened/was said?", and
can usually answer myself by looking at the subtitles. For much the same reason, I have audio description on when available. The subtitles _do_
help when it's an accent I'm not good at (a lot of American ones, but a
lot of urban British ones, too).

I think this _has_ partly hidden from me _some_ deterioration in my
hearing; I recently did the RNIB website test (which reads out digits
with an increasing amount of white noise), and they _tell_ me I may have
the initial signs of some loss. But I really only did it because I'd
done some of the YouTube ones and discovered my upper frequency limit is
now quite low; I hadn't been aware of any difficulty understanding face-to-face conversation, or anything like that.>

Subtitles for overall English (or American) programming, where some
foreign language is used (I don't know 6MM - is it nominally English?),
are a difficult choice; if it's a drama (including film, TV series,
etc.), and the main characters are supposed not to understand what's
being said, then I think it's right that we shouldn't be given English subtitles, as that puts us in the same position as the English-speaking characters. Well, not quite: ideally, rather than "(speaks German)" or similar, which is what's usually done, I think there should be
subtitles, but in German; that way, it'd be like real life, you could
pick up the odd word or phrase. But I realise that's asking a lot of the subtitlers!
If it's a foreign-language drama, then it should have English subtitles (ideally via the normal mechanism, so they can be turned off by those
who speak that language - in fact ideally selectable language, which I
think the technology can do, but again would probably be asking a lot!).

If it's a burst in the news, then - reluctantly - I agree with what's
    usually done, English voice-over.--
