• Insulation question

    Another question about our little boat.

    I have been lifting the floor (over the engine) and I'm wondering
    whether a thin insulation layer is doing any good at all.

    The floor comprises three layers:-

    * 18mm ply resting on lengths of angle which provides the strength.
    * 2mm expanded polystyrene with foil on one side
    * laminate about 6mm thick

    Is the expanded polystyrene layer doing any good? I doubt it provides
    any sound insulation. Is its thermal insulation of any consequence
    compared with the plywwod + laminate? Finally is it just a standard
    layer under laminate?

    It's probably doing sound-deadening rather than sound insulation, I'd
    say if your feet were in contact with the foam it would feel warm to the touch, but actual insulation not really any effect ...
