    Bit late to the party, but is this perhaps a throwback to the old
    mechanical dials. I am sure I can just remember in my very early
    motoring days picking up the handle and watching the dials (as in
    mechanical reels) spin round to zero, from the last customer. This was
    in the very early days of self service. (there was no central office and
    you had to go in and tell the guy in the hut how much petrol you had
    just pumped - yes we did used to live in a society like that in my youth
    - in rural areas at least). I am sure they used to have a sign which
    said ensure all dials return to zero before inserting nozzle. On just a
    couple of times it didnrCOt quite return to zero and you had to replace
    the handle and get it to recycle.
