I'm tempted to update straight away: it might possibly fix my Apple Mail <-> Gmal problems, which I still have not fathomed out. That started shortly
    after I'd updtaed to 15.5.

OTOH, it might ontroduce new bugs, while my Mail problem drifts slowly astern in the history of Apple OS's, leaving me marooned!

Updating logs me out of the user account but when I log back in after
updating, I'm still signed into iCloud. When logging out normally
I do have it set to remember open windows when logging back in,

Not usually, but you may have hit a "sign in again and see the updated
usage agreement and hit ok" thing? Or just a timeout, which appear to
    exist.
