I am needing to do some research into my wife's family tree. Can anyone recommend a piece of software suitable for this task and for the Mac?

    Many thanks for any help.

I asked this a while ago, thinking it was time to move on from the rather elderly-looking GEDitCOM. But having looked at the alternatives I came back to GEDitCOM. It does have a very old-fashioned interface, but is very configurable, sticks closely to the GEDCOM standard and is actively
    maintained.

Having said all that, I see it's now $65, which makes it not quite such a no-brainer as it might once have been! Anyway, worth a look:

Reunion. I have used it for over 20 years now! OK, it's not cheap, but it
will save you hours and hours of time and time is money.

I have some 9900 peope in it, of which more than half are blood relations -
    the rest are spoused.

Works fine in Tahoe; I have not yet tried ReunionTouch on my updated iPad

I think it has got rather outdated. Try MacFamilyTree instead - it goes
    on sale fairly often.

I've used Gramps in the past. Free and open source.

I use FamilySearch.org, run by the Mormons as a free service, but often
gets good reviews. ItrCOs free as well.
