• OT: MetOffice web page problem

    From Graham J@nobody@nowhere.co.uk to uk.comp.sys.mac on Tue Jun 24 13:00:18 2025
    From Newsgroup: uk.comp.sys.mac

Using iPad version 15.8.4 Safari shows <https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/> correctly but but navigating to a recent place - Thetford - like this:

    <https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/forecast/u12d1jksg#?date=2025-06-24>

... brings up a broken page.

Firefox shows the same problem as does Safari. Firefox is version 139.2
which I think is fully up-to-date.

The site did work correctly yesterday but this problem started sometime
    during the evening.

    Anybody else see this?

I can describe the broken page - please ask.

Using latest Safari and Firefox on my iPad Mini 5 with iPadOS 18.5, it
seems OK both full and reduced format views.

Comes up fine here on Safari. Cache problem maybe?

    Looks fine on my phone.

Do you have a cookie or adware blocker enabled somewhere? I do get weird behaviour on some sites which I end up resolving when I turn off the widget
    or app doing the blocking.

    Please describe it.

The home page <https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/> has a background picture
of green fields and yellow flowers (remember this) in the foreground,
covered by a black rectangle showing recent places in the form of a
menu. I navigate to a recent place.

Now I see a black background, the Met Office logo, some links in dark
blue then a "Menu" box. A title "Weather & climate" is followed by
several headings. I scroll down to an area with a blue sky background
with text about my current location and summaries for the coming week. Scrolling further down the sky background changes to show the same green fields as the previous page. I scroll down further and see a corrupted version of today's forecast as I remember its appearance from yesterday
and earlier. Further scrolling shows forecasts for tomorrow through to
next Monday. There are then more images as I scroll further.

So all the material for the previously working site is present in one
long page, whereas until Wednesday evening (23 June) each section was a separate page with the facility to navigate from one page to another by selecting the desired date or link.

    Hi Graham

    I have a suggestion.

Please go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > (Search for) MetOffice as
    shown here:-

    https://i.ibb.co/rGq0HwYt/Screenshot-2025-06-25-at-09-24-09.png

    Then click "Remove".

    Quit Safari

Then open Safari and then go here:- https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/

Accept the Cookies ........ and all should be back to normal!

    Please advise!

I'm seeing that. Safari on iPad OS 12.5.6.
I'm guessing the Met Office dropped support for old versions of Safari.

As Apple won't allow alternative browser engines, Firefox on i(Pad)OS is
just a skin of Safari so not surprising that works exactly the same, as even
if you're running a 'new' version it's still using the old Safari engine integrated in the OS.
