• Apple Notes slow

Sorry for cross-posting to UCSM, but there's lots of expertise there that
may not be in the ipad ng.

I've over 1600 mostly hand written notes saved to my ipad (9th gen) and
sync'd with icloud. The ipad is being quite unresponsive with selecting and opening any new notes. Like 4-5 second lag. Once open it's fine.

In all other respects the ipad is great.

Is this an icloud, ipad, internet or other issue? Does anyone else have
this many or more notes on their ipad?

On my Mac (M2 MBP), I've no issues in terms of performance, but can't do as much with the notes as I can on the ipad.

The ipad has done me well over the last three years so am open to getting a newer one if it's a hardware issue as I use it daily.

Have you carried out this simple procedure?

Sounds like it is possibly the notes are not actually stored on the
iPad, so have to be re-downloaded from the iCloud servers before
    opening each time.

Try this to see if it helps: <https://www.idownloadblog.com/2024/08/07/how-to-keep-icloud-drive-files-always-downloaded/>

I'm not sure how that function works. It may take a while to
re-download all the Notes files in one go OR it may not help the first
time you access a particular Notes file since it will have to
re-download it, but after that it should be stored on the iPad itself
(as well as synced to the iCloud server).

That's a good thought. Turning off wifi makes no difference. The notes are still all there, but the lag is still the same.

    So not a download lag.

If you visit your 'Notes' by accessing them via wwww.icloud.com do your

Another possibility is simply too many or too many complex notes Files.
Some people have reported that organising their Notes files into
sub-folders helps with various speed (and crashing) issues in Notes.

Technically they're in your icloud.com email account which, of course,
    is in iCloud.

Go into Notes -> Accounts and you'll see a list of your current email providers. Under the name of the account there is small text providing
    more info.

For iCloud there's a ton of things e.g. Mail, Contacts, Calendars. For
other email providers it will just say Mail, Notes or Mail and Notes depending.

OK. I've archived all my historical notes by year back to 2021.

    No difference unfortunately.

I wonder if the fact that I use tags extensively is not helping. They
are super useful and would really miss them if I can't use them.

Is there an alternative Notes app I can try that allows tagging notes to multiple topics?

Mrs B uses Evernote which seems to support tags but IrCOve not checked that

Is there an alternative Notes app I can try that allows tagging notes to

Mrs B uses Evernote which seems to support tags but IrCOve not checked that out personally.

    Does it do handwriting?

    Short answer: dunno.

But we found this on the user forum:

How much unused storage does the iPad have? If it is full with other
things (e.g. photos) then maybe Notes have been swapped out to iCloud

It's got enough space remaining with all notes downloaded.

Another possibility: remember that Notes are associated with IMAP
accounts rather than iCloud per se, so it might be an email provider
problem depending on the default account used for new notes.
Er, I don't follow. These notes are explicitly in icloud rather than an
    email account.

Technically they're in your icloud.com email account which, of course,
    is in iCloud.

Go into Notes -> Accounts and you'll see a list of your current email
providers. Under the name of the account there is small text providing
    more info.

For iCloud there's a ton of things e.g. Mail, Contacts, Calendars. For
other email providers it will just say Mail, Notes or Mail and Notes
    depending.

Here, it's showing iCloud associated with Notes. And a gmail account as my iCloud email.

IOW, it looks to me as though iCloud is something separate to email accounts.

Rather belatedly: Notes started as a thing that stored its data in IMAP,
but for many yeasrs now it's stored directly as a database in iCloud and
    synced with your local machine(s).

Since this is Apple and they give zero tools for troubleshooting, about
the only thing you can try is
    * Move any local notes to iCloud
    * check on icloud.com to be sure they're all up there
    * disable iCloud sync for Notes on the troublesome client
    * clear your local Notes entirely
    * re-enable iCloud sync.

Same routine as most other iCloud hosted synced things.

A very good summary and this is the way to go, Jamie!
