    It isn't highly polyploid it only has 4 sex chromosomes. Instead they
    claim that the high number of chromosomes is due to chromosomal fission.
    My guess is that a centromere sequence somehow became associated with
    a transposon or retrovirus and caused the fissions due to creating
    multiple centromeres on each chromosome. There had to be some mechanism
    to heal the broken ends with functional telomeres.

    The nearest to this I've heard of is the plant genus Carex with diffuse centromeres and labile karyotypes. But chromosome number there may top
    out at 112, and that one may well be a tetraploid.
