The last two flu seasons have had 41 cases of acute necrotizing encephalopathy. It sounds like the same symptoms exhibited by the cats
that died of the dairy virus, but these kids were mostly infected by the common subtypes that are prevalent this year (H1N1 and H3N2, 18 unknown subtypes of influenza A, and 2 influenza B). They only report the brain infections, but the cats were infected in their guts. They had diarrhea
and literally pooped themselves out (had empty guts) by the time they
died of the brain infection. They were nearly all infected by ingesting
the virus in raw pet food or raw milk. Somehow the virus went from
    their guts to their brains.

27% (11 out of 41) died within 3 days of showing symptoms, most of the survivors had disabilities after recovery and only 13 could walk on
    their own without assistance.

If these kids did have diarrhea like the cats that should be part of the notifications that they are sending out to doctors that have to diagnose
these cases as quickly as possible.

Even though influenza A is avian influenza it doesn't infect birds
because it has adapted to mammals, but the paper that I posted a while
ago noted that most of the cattle (both beef and dairy) tested had
antibodies for influenza A. They had likely been infected by humans,
but the virus would be propagating in the cattle herds. Those samples
were collected before the dairy epidemic, and they did not find H5N1
among the antibody positive cattle. It might not be good to drink raw
milk from an influenza A infected cow. Children may be more susceptible
    until they gain effective immunity.
