• ESPN and Taylor Townsend

    From Scall5@nospam@home.net to rec.sport.tennis on Fri Aug 29 22:39:53 2025
    From Newsgroup: rec.sport.tennis

After the Je-+ena Ostapenko match I knew that ESPN would ramp up the
"Taylor is suffering from racism" to a high degree.

However, Darren Cahill, Rennae Stubbs, and Christopher Eubanks exceeded
my expectations to the ninth degree! Well played chaps!

Townsend said she beat Ostapenko in Canada which is outside the US, and
she beat her in New York which is outside the US. Look up her oncourt interview if you don't believe me. Sure it's not required to apologize
for a net cord, but it's not an example of class and good sportsmanship
imo. No apology required from Penko imo. It's not unreasonable to
conclude Townsend is uneducated and not a good sportsman, based on some
of the evidence on display in that match. Not very woke of me, but it
    is what it is.

Apologies for net cords are entirely insincere and everyone knows
it, but it's still polite to do it. But what's more rude, to fail
to apologize or to demand the apology? It comes off as petty and
vengeful, imo. But Ostapenko is an entitled brat and clearly a
    sore loser.

It's not a big deal. You don't have to be a classy or intelligent
player, but nothing wrong with being called out on it either imo. Being
called out is not a big deal either, but fuck being woke, prefer
everyone is honest and genuine. As crass as Ostapenko is I've always
seen her raise her hand in apology when she hits a net cord. It doesn't
mean she's actually sorry, but acknowledges the luck element in her
winning that point. I don't care if players yell 'c'mon suck on that
one!' after a net cord. Jerks in sport make it more interesting.

Remember that time Bouchard wouldn't shake hands with opponents in Fed
Cup as she didn't want to wish them well, because that would be fake?
Nothing wrong with that, but it comes with 'bad girl' aura and is not considered a good sport (though she is a good sort) : )

I agree. I always raise my hand and at times I would say sorry but
for me it's about my own shame for not being able to clear the
net with my strokes although at times it feels really bad when I
didn't even hit the ball at all to find myself winning undeserved

The net cord incident happened in the first set. If she was
legitimately upset about the lack of apology, why not address it
closer to when it happened? And again, would she have said a word
about it if she had won the match? If no, it's just sour grapes
and totally classless to bring it up after the match.

Seriously, osta needs to hit the gym instead of the hardee's, and
work on her damn serve... 15(!) double faults is amateur level
    stuff.

The fact that Ostapenko made her complaint *publicly* tells me that the
whole thing was performative. She was pissed about the loss and perhaps Townsend's lack of sufficient decorum was excuse enough to try to divert attention from the unquestionable fact that she had just lost.
