Conmebol WCQ 2026 ends with heartbreak, as Venezuela screws up
spectacularly at home while Bolivia earns a brave, though meager home
win that was good enough to send them to the intercontinental playoffs. Bolivia gets closer to return to the World Cup after 32 years, though I
think it's unlikely for them to survive the playoffs (for one thing,
they'll be on neutral territory, though of course it'll depend on wthe
draw). Venezuela, yet again, are out.

As for the other teams, not much to say: Chile indeed finishes last,
Ecuador takes over 2nd place and Brasil ends with its worst ever
qualifying run since the double round-robin system was adopted.

    Ecuador 1-0 Argentina

A penalty kick goal by Enner Valencia, 12 minutes deep into first half
injury time, separated the two teams at Estadio Monumental de Guayaquil.
Not much else of note, other than a red card apiece (for Otamendi, for a
last man foul, and Mois|-s Caicedo, second yellow). Ecuador rounds off a
solid qualifying effort on a good note, finishing second despite the
    three point penalty.

    Peru 0-1 Paraguay

Paraguay finds their first and only away win on this cycle at Est|idio Monumental de Lima, against the hapless Peruvians. A nice goal by
ex-Vasco player Mat|!as Galarza settled the win for the visitors, on the
    77th minute.

    Venezuela 3-6 Colombia

A shower of goals and a grand style collapse that spelled heartbreak for
the Vinotinto, at Est|idio Monumental de Matur|!n. And it all seemed to
start so well! Telasco Segovia scored the first goal of the round, in
the 2nd minute. Yerry Mina drew level on the 9th, but Josef Mart|!nez
quickly put Venezuela ahead again two minutes later.

Then the floodgates opened. Four goals by Luis Su|irez (41', 49', 58' and
66') seemed to put the match way beyond Venezuela's reach. Salom||n
Rond||n replied at the 75th, and Venezuela immediately missed a
mano-a-mano in the following play that could have made it 4-5. Instead,
on the 77th, Jhon C||rdoba finished them off. On final whistle Venezuela
still hanged on, as Bolivia vs Brasil wasn't over yet and one goal by
the exhausted Brazilians would send them through. But it never came, and
yet again Venezuela misses out the World Cup finals.

    Bolivia 1-0 Brasil

Bolivia does its homework at Estadio Municipal de El Alto and beats
Brasil for the first time since 2009, and way to pick a clutch time to
do that, as that guarantees them Conmebol's intercontinental playoff
spot. The first half was almost entirely Bolivia's, with Brasil showing
early they wouldn't have legs for this one, though the goal came from a penalty kick converted by Miguel Terceros, some three minutes inside
    first half injury time.

Brazilian TV made a meal out of the altitude (I almost wondered if that
was news to them?), but over the second half Brasil looked a lot closer
to score the equalizer than Bolivia to finishing the game off. That
meant a bit of a tense endgame as Colombian goals piled up in Matur|!n,
since a single goal by Brasil would eliminate Bolivia and send Venezuela through. But it didn't come, and Bolivians wildly celebrated final
whistle and a playoff spot that puts them the closest to the World Cup
    they've been in 32 years.

    Chile 0-0 Uruguay

Dead rubber match at Est|idio Nacional de Santiago. Both sides created a number of chances, not many of these on target, though.

So, there we have it. Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brasil and Paraguay qualified to the World Cup. Bolivia are the second team to
qualify to the intercontinental playoffs, after New Caledonia, where
they are to be joined by one team from CAF, one from AFC and two from Concacaf.

And here's the final table, plus the home and away breakdown.

So it was actually Bolivia's away record that got them to the interconfederation play-offs ahead of Venezuela, Peru and Chile. :-)

Anyway, we all know what happened last time Brazil did this badly in
the World Cup qualifiers. Brazil are going to win the World Cup now.

Under the old qualifying system, Brazil would only have made it to the interconfederation play-offs.
